Question on importing footage

I'm capturing the entire footage of my tapes and I'm wondering if I can put clips offline that I'm not using or are unusable so it doesn't slow down the computer. If there is a way how do I do it?
 
you could import all the footage at low quality (320x240, for example) and edit, then import the full size footage of only what you need.
 
Check out the "Offline and Online Editing" chapter in the Final Cut Pro manual. It talks about how to create low resolution proxies for editing and then up-converting to the full quality when you are ready to output.
