question on field recorder

I'm a total stranger to sound so please be gentle:embarasse.... I've always fancied the idea of recording my sound separately (perhaps fantasizing on something more "pro"), up until now I've been recording straight to camera (HPX170) and with the occasional help of some good friend on the boom pole who's constantly hooked up to me (I mainly do documentary, events and arty stuff) which sort of becomes annoying on run and gun situations.... so, now to the point....I came across this two recorders:

I work mostly with a Sennheiser MKH416 and I wonder if it would be good in combination with any of the recorders mentioned above... I like the pocket size of the recorders but I wonder as well about the whole "size does matter" kind of thing... what do you gurus think of it? what kind of advantages soundwise i would get with a solution like this instead of the straight to camera method? any help will be much appreciated......
 
There's another thread on the Zoom H4n that people are really liking...do a search for it.

Both of the units you mentioned are good...I think it's just a case of personal preference. All have phantom (which you need for the 416) and having been a rep for Marantz in a past life, I know they make quality stuff. Check out the Zoom and see what you think.
 
I think you might be better served to invest in decent camera hop wireless units
rather than a separate recorder.

Since you do doc's and events..etc you would constantly be having to sync
tons and tons of files in post.
It would be a slight pain in the neck with a timecode recorder,camera.
but non sync would be a total nightmare in my opinion.
 
Yes, Synch... nightmare... but how about those two recorders to capture ambient sound?
 
I did see the ZoomH4n but I've read that the xlr's are not line inputs as opposed to the 661 for instance...
 
Rippie, which hop wireless units would you recommend on the price tag of those recorders?
 
im not the best one to ask here
regarding the budget stuff.

But I do believe most people seem to like the Senn G2's.
in the $500 dollar bracket.

$4500 bux.

ouch... that's steep... yeah, I'll have a look into those G2's... thanks for the help brothers in arms!
 
I've heard some nice things about the Zoom, but apparently it's also quite delicate. A few people have reported that even a small "bump" can corrupt the file that is currently being recorded, although all the previous and subsequent files are okay. I don't know if I would trust it as my main recording device, although a lot of production sound guys use it as a cheap back-up device and post guys keep it in the glove box, whatever, as a quick sound capture device.

Is that on the H4...or the new H4n? I was handling the new one (H4n) at NAB and it seems to be built very solid...WAY better than the original H4. The National Sales Manager said the H4 will be going away as soon as the stock runs out.
 
I've never had that problem with my H4. Never heard of anyone having it, but maybe they have. At any rate, the H4n looks like a nice piece of gear.
