Question on boom setup

Hello!
I just got a rode ntg-2 mic and I'm ready to use it! My question is do you just get a really long xlr cable for booming and plug the mic straight into the camera? And Do you use the headphones jack on the camera? My headphones only have like a 6 ft chord, so thats not much mobility. How do you usually set up your mic?

usually not , but if that what you have thats the way
better get external preamp or mixer and ride the levels before it go to the camera .
you can buy extension cord for the headphones
 
you dont have to be ready for a mixer , you have to be ready understand what are you doing - read books and look at the past ( old treads)
there is nothing as good reading for few days
