Viewing the DVX with an anamorphic lens attached, do I see all the horizontal lines coming from the DVX using a Sony PVM14L1 using it's 16:9 aspect ratio capability?
With blank screen above and below wouldnt I see all the horizontal scan lines? Do I only need Underscan in the 4:3 aspect setting? This is a strange question I know, but I can get a great deal on one of these monitors. And I do want to see all the image, boom poles and all.

Maybe if I re-word my question. Does the Sony PVM 14L-1 monitor display all horizonal scan lines whenswitched to the 16:9 aspect ration setting?

Yes. you are seeing everything at top and bottom. BUT you are missing quite a lot left and right (7% overscan from specs), so unwanted lightiing stands and boom operators might stray into shot at the sides that you wouldn't see!

You have to decide whether that's something you can live with, or to go for the more expensive next model up 14L2 which does have underscan.

Thank You Kind Sir for your answer.
Who will see these phantom pixels?
Would they show up in lets say a film transfer?
Or maybe they will show up on those new fancy flat screen tvs.

Re: Question - Monitor/4:3 and 16:9no underscan

Yes, it would show up on a film transfer, but you could zoom in slightly and reframe to lose the offending item. Downside is you would lose resolution, and possibly have interpolation artifacts if the zoom in was done digitally rather than optically.

Although some flat displays have electronic blanking, it would almost certainly show up on SOME LCD or plasma displays as these don't have overscan as such.

Professionals always use underscan to be certain their footage is clean and doesn't need postproduction just to make the shot acceptable technically.

You might want to look at a very good lower cost software alternative called DV Rack. There are two differently priced versions, but both have the underscan "field monitor" (cheaper one won't go 16:9 though). Of course you need a Windows computer to run it and preferably a laptop to make it portable! They are doing a great mail in rebate offer until the end of February. Might even be worth buying a cheap laptop to run it and a long firewire cable! (It only works with DV at the moment).
