Question from an ADR Noob

Is there a way that I can feed my Tascam directly into the computer? Is it as simple as feeding a line out to the microphone line in of my desktop?

Are you asking how to upload already recorded files to your cpu or whether your recorder will function as a computer interface? You didn't specify which recorder you are using, so that will make a difference.

Usually, recorders have a usb port and some, but not all, will have the ability to send a signal as you are recording. If your device has a firewire port, that will work also.

If your recorder has a "line-out" plug, that can work, but likely the output levels won't match up well to a "mic-in" plug on your CPU. So USB or Firewire is a better option. Also, usually the "mic-input" on a CPU records a in low quality. If you want to feed audio direct to a CPU in this way, an relatively inexpensive sound expansion card starting at around $100 will really help.

The DR-100 does not have the capability to be used as an interface, but you really don't need it to. You really have two choices. Record to the DR-100 and then sync, or buy an interface. For about $200 you can buy an interface with pre-amps as good as the DR-100. Personally, I would NOT take the line out from the DR-100 to use as my primary audio for the final product. If you cannot buy an interface, I would record straight into the DR-100, and then sync the files.

By the way, I have found that ADR goes much faster if I show the actor the scene once, and then turn off the monitor, and just play them the audio, have them repeat it, and do this several times until the cadance and inflictions match. Often time the actor is distracted by watching the video and tries too hard to match their lip movements to what they see, rather than what they hear.
