Question for Shooters in California

I saw this on a craigslist ad for Washington DC:

"Hey everyone. My name is ***** owner of **** productions. I am flying from LA to produce a wedding and looking for a DP with gear (RED,Blackmagic,Sony) preferred. I am willing to pay a good amount for someone quality. Also open to renting the equipment needed for the wedding. Here in California I can get a DP for a full 10 hours, with RED,lighting and Dolly/slider for under $400 so please no crazy numbers or it will make me laugh. I will let you use the footage also for your reel or website as I believe everyone should be able to grow. Feel free to email back with any questions, gear list and what you require. I am very easy to work with and please be down to earth. Thanks"

Is that true? Is it possible to get a quality shooter for that price?

Wow California's going downhill. I charge 2-3 times that
for a mediocre shooter with a Sony FS700 here in Alaska.
Or maybe (just maybe) he's full of it. But hey, he will
'let' you use the footage you shoot with your own gear,
on your reel. Speaking of laughing...,.

I am shocked to find gambling here:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

:2vrolijk_08: I pay my people close to that for using my gear and most of them aren't very skilled, but they are reliable. I say good luck to that fellow.

I just passed on something from a company wanting to do a network pilot. 12 hour day, required c300 package and 1x1 LED lights, for $1000 total (labor included). I don't own any of that so would have had to rent.

I hear you but that is at least a semi reasonable rate. Saying you will
laugh at anything more than $400 day rate make me suspect rather
strongly that he doesn't work with anyone other than bottom feeders.
I just did a shoot for ABC World News. According to the rate sheet
they sent me (which was dated 2013) they pay about $50/hr for labor
anything over 8 hours is OT. If you have a 'professional' camera (2/3 inch
chip or above) they pay $600 a day for that. DSLR's is $250 a day.
Then extra lighting and audio can get you $100-$150 each plus your
meal per diem which is $56 a day. There is other extras that can get
you $75-$100 too but it kind of depends what gear they want you to
have on the shot. My FS700 was in the $600 per day category
so I made a little more than $1000 per day (I was working 10 hour
days so got some OT too) but at least that is closer
to a real rate.

Yeah, I guess my point didn't really land. IF I owned that stuff, I could have maybe done it. Having to rent? Forget it. My colleagues generally tell people from out of town who say "I can get a _____ for $_____ in _____ [city]", "well then go ahead and do so!"

Yeah, I know. That's why it's hard when they require 'camera X' instead of saying
'large sensor camera that shoots 50mbps or higher'. It often forces you to rent which
ruins the economics of the job.
