Question for David Jimerson

David, You mentioned in another thread that you built a smokin machine (PC) for Vegas for $900. Would you mind listing what that machine consisted of? Like name and brand of motherboard, HDs, RAM, Processors, PCI cards etc.
I currently use a laptop, but I'm thinking "more power - less money."

bart

Sure.

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Mobo
AMD X2 4400+ CPU
2 GB Corsair PC 3200
GeForce 6600 PCIe 256MB
2 200GB WD SATA HDD

Got it from ZipZoomFly.com.

Asus has the worst customer support possible to be a legit company. BEWARE.

Also I would stay away from the Nvidia nforce4 chipset, can be very buggy depending on other computer hardware and Nvidia has just about completely abandoned it for nforce5.

I own a ASUS P5N32_SLI_DELUXE, it has had 3 BIOS revisions since release, around 3months ago, and not one has been bugfree, they are all BROKEN revisions, STILL waiting. On top of that Nvidia and DROPPED THE BALL with their x16 support, giving zero effort. With 2 EVGA 7900GT CO in SLI 32-1-1-1-1, I regret not going with an INTEL chipset and ATI CROSSFIRE.

John, are you trying to offend me?
Do some research, I was just try to help someone out.........I know what I'm talking about in this department.

David, I've gotten a lot of information for you and hold you in respect, but your computer isnt rocking in the real sense until you post some benchmark results.

I wish I still had an old email from Asus customer support, besides having no possible way to contact a human being, the emails they send you are in broken english. I wish I had saved one which was posted on the Asus P5N32SLI forum about 1month ago, it made no sense whatsoever no matter how many times it was read over again, it was a big joke. Then the moderators at the ASUS forum went ahead and deleted the post entirely, they do stuff like that all the time, threads just disapear.

You'd know if I was trying to offend you Just making light of the usual forum exchange

1. Hook me up with X please

2. Yes, it is A, B and C

3. B sucks. C is buggy. Beware of A

4. Meanwhile A, B and C rock on.

Well in this case, it's a fact that nforce4 is buggy and that nvidia is moving on to bigger and better things ie nforce 5. They just dropped the support which I need for x16 chipset since the improvment over SLI16x and SLI32x is almost non existant.

Then second, ASUS does have horrible CS. Read what I just edited above about and if you believe me, then I imagine you agree that is bad CS. The thing I mentioned about the BIOS rev was also to explain the bad CS, if ASUS worked on fixed BIOS rev then the other other problem with this mobo would be te nforce4chipset.

Just an example of bugs,

asus has release 2 BETA bios ina ROW, ever heard of that? on top of 3 other bios revisions, thats 5 bios. Nvidia has released 3 different chipset drivers in a row, do you think tat 5 bios and 3 chipset drivers are all compatible?

Backup programs, system restore, and disk monitoring programs ... don't work right with NVidia RAID ...Or at least they don't work like they used to or are supposed to under the INTEL system.
WHY ? NV Raid's architecture BYPASSES the old channels...so you can't even SEE the disks or individual array members in Windows. AND neither does most Backup software, or system restores. Some Backup programs can be patched and configured to work around thisbut is something to have to deal with.

The same issues are happening with INTEL and AMD boards, pointing more of the problems towards the nvidia chipset, nvidia even threatened asus with a lawsuit unless they pulled support of the 900 series Intel CPU's from the P5ND32 board?

Maybe most importantly, WHY is INTEL and ASUS using ATI + Crossfire in their latest motherboards, which incidently revert back to the INTEL chipset?

Well, my IT guy just built me a system with an ASUS board, and he swears by them. He knows more about computers than anyone I've ever met, and when he builds his own systems, he goes with Asus.

When my tech who knows more than god about computers says go Asus, I go asus. I've had and used them for years, and I've never had one problem with 4 different custom built machines.

That was my point. For every story that screams BEWARE there is a story that says the opposite. Unless it's a Gremilin it is usually bias, preference and a bad personal experience over the facts.

David built his own computer and swears by it's performance ? What good does it for someone to come in and dispel that very fact ?

I use an Nvidia Quadro FX 3400 256 MB with Dual Xeon CPU's and a RAID (SATA)array and could not be more stoked with this set-up ( Z E R O I S S U E S) but I bet someone can come in and tell me it's a buggy piece of worm poo.

As far as one company having superior customer support / service over another ? That is a dying art anyway. Who does have that these day's ?

Notice that the only complaint is about a few bios options they would like changed, and those have been implemented since the review

And I really like this comment:

"The performance of the Asus A8V Deluxe is first class, in most of our benchmarks it was ahead of the equivalent MSI board and in some cases (such as Colin McRae) by a considerable amount. When overclocking the addition of selectable multipliers has made great difference to the appeal of the board for enthusiast users. In our overclocking section, results were as expected and no concerns were found even when running at the higher multipler. When we had the BIOS configured to our liking and the board was up and running we didnt experience any concerns with regards to stability or strange issues and other than our concerns with the BIOS (2 samples were tried) the board really cant be faulted and would be a great purchase for socket 939 CPU users. "

Read up peeps.

I'd be interested to know what he thinks of their customer support? And hes right about swearing by asus when it comes to their boards, minus ones with the nforce4 chipset which is separate from asus and is all nvidia.

okay read back and remember what I was saying is that their customer support is what is horrible and to BEWARE of that, I' stand by that, and I am speaking only of english customer support and the bios support with NFORCE4, which is also part of nvidia's fault. The BIOS issue I mentioned all relate to customer support issue, the board is rock solid, quality. I also said the bios for the P5N32 is what is broken, not the A8V. The nforce4 chipset has problems so thats why I mentioned it since the board has it and nforce4 is being replaced by nforce5 combined with bugs it might be worth looking into an intel chipset.

EVGA has top notch customer support, they even have a step-up program where I turned my 2 7800gt to 2 7900gt and only have pay the difference, great program.

Maybe I sohuldn't have opened my mouth but I believe customer support is a very important thing, you need to able to contact another person.

Oh and I never said anything about Davids system, I only mention asus customer support John and that the motherboard he has uses a chipset that can be buggy, like it or not, it can be buggy. His board is also very popular, one of the most common boards that is bought by amd users who know whats up. The whole system is what really decides whether or no there will be bugs, some people with the P5N32 even have said they run everything no problem and the board is a dream using the 212 bios that all the boards ship with atm, and its in agreeance with the majority of users on the asus forum that rev 212 is the worst. So its all what you run individually, I'll never call someone out about their system not being good because they run a system with a component that I cant run or choose not to. And what I said to David about benchmarks was just on the real, maybe in a geek sense or something but benchmarks are cool.

I just think the more info you have the better.

And bart if you are buying a PSU I'd look into the OCZ powerstream, they are extremely high quality and their customer support is also something to rave about, almost as good as EVGA.

I can transcode DV to DVD-quality MPEG-2 in less than 2/3 real time.

I'm not a (serious) gamer, so I've never tried the SLi array.
