Question concerning DV Rebel guide & AE/ Premiere pro ..?

So I've learned a ton from Stu's book but now I use a hpx170 and only shoot Hd (mostly 24pn 720p) and just had a question regarding the 16-235 club section, page 235. Basically it states how to bring back any luminance values (clipping from camera) and the process was > Levels, video to computer Or using the levels Effect and setting the RGB input black to 16. Does this still hold weight with DVCPro HD 720 footage? And also since I would be working in 16 bit, do the numbers change?

I'm asking this because this is what I have done:

I recorded a music video . 4 minutes and change. when I 1st imported my footage I used the Panasonic P2 ingester to import my footage (Not through premiere pro). I then imported my footage into a new sequence in prem pro cs4. ( I did not do the maximum bit depth checkmark <-- I just learned about this from the book. something I swear I must have blew by and has pissed me off..lol) Then I cut all my footage , locked it and saved it.
I then opened after effects and imported the premiere sequence, added color correction, effects and basically alot of work BUT when I was watching dora the explorer with my son (yeah, he makes me) I grabbed Stu's book began reading like I do and saw the section on Clipping and preserving detail and said 'ah sh!t'! So is there a way to bring back detail in certain shots I know may have clipped (and maybe some I dont ) without having to redo something in premiere or can I do that technique in AE also...??

Or maybe I could just run an adjustment layer on any of the footage that may have clipped and bring back my details?
Hope that all made sense .

BTW I'm on a PC with CS4.

any help is appreciated

Stu’s book was written pre CS3. Since then, AE has allowed you to work in 32bpc, so you won’t have to worry about any of the ProcAmp stuff in PP, or modifying the input levels.

Unfortunately – and bafflingly – however, AE still has no native way of displaying a waveform view. There are some relatively inexpensive plug-ins that will provide this function, although one possible workaround is to import your AE project into PP via ‘Dynamic Link’, in order to take advantage of PP’s waveform display. You won’t get truly real-time feedback: you’ll have to tweak the levels in AE, and then click over to PP to see how you’re doing.

You will have to deal with each clip individually to preserve the superbrights; there is no one-click solution.

Finally, if you’re using any sub-32bpc effects on any of the clips that have had their highlights rescued, you’ll want to look into the ‘HDR Compander’ effect. If you don’t already have it, I’d recommend picking up Mark Christiansen’s book, which covers this in more detail than the standard help files. It’s a perfect companion to the DVRG (Stu also wrote the forward) and an essential reference for anyone using AE for VFX and mastering.

Good Luck!
