Question about Zoom H4N

I noticed the Zoom H4N has a Line/Phone output jack. A line output (fixed) and a phone output (variable) are two different things. So, how do you switch between the two?

Also, if the phone output is variable, couldn't you use that as an "attenuator" to run into a mic input on a DSLR?

They only mean that it's an output you could send to an audio system or headphones for playback, just like you would use an ipods headphone out.

And yes, you could send it to a dslr input, but the sound quality of the headphone/ line amp is very bad, noisy, and has a weird phasing issue during recording, so I wouldn't recommend doing that. The audio you'll get from the H4n's recordings will sound much better.

There's a little more of a difference between traditional line output and headphone outputs. It has to do with impedance matching and signal levels.
