Question about Time Lapse in FCP

I am trying to put together some timelapse shots. I assembled the shots in QT player, saving them as self contained pictures. They are 2784x1856 and the compression is Photo JPEG. When I try to put them into a timeline, I get a red render line. I have tried switching the compression in the sequence to Photo JPEG but the same results.
Any thoughts about how I could get these to play without rendering first? They play find in the preview window.
