Question about telephoto/widescreen filming on dvx

I am hoping this weekend to get a dvx100a and if I do it'll probably come with a widescreen and telephoto adapter. Now I know that telephoto is generally better for depth of field, as it is easier to seperate foreground from the background with that lens. So my question is this. Can I shoot a film in 16x9 squeeze mode using both lenses during different situations: ie. Wide angle lens for twoshots/wide shots etc, and the telephoto for closeup and macros and depth of field shots.

I assume this will work as described, but will they work together when the final project is cut together. I hope this is a well phrased question, if not you can tell me how stupid I am. 8)

It will certainly work just as you described, provided that by "widescreen adapter" you meant a wide-angle adapter, right?

The term "widescreen" adapter would probably be more appropriately applied to the anamorphic adapter, and there you'd have a little more trouble mixing and matching, although you could use the anamorphic WITHOUT SQUEEZE and the telephoto WITH SQUEEZE and probably intermix them fairly well.

Right, well I did mean wide-angle adapter. What I'm trying to do when I make my films is really get that Wells/Tarintino depth of field look on the closeups and still be able to get that deep focus on the wide shots. I was thinking about getting that 16x9 adapter, but as it's a lot of money I'm not sure. I guess I'll shoot all my stuff in squeeze mode and there in lies another question:)

If I shoot in squeeze mode and then hook my cam directly to a tv what will my stuff look like. I assume it will look stretched vertically right? But if I author my stuff in premier and export it back to tape can I get it to look widescreen on the tv? If not can I edit it and export and burn to DVD and get the widescreen look? ie. the bars?

For a 4:3 TV, use letterbox mode.

For a 16:9 TV, use squeeze.

But movies on DVD are shown on 16x9 and displayed on a 4:3 tv, so why can't I get mine to?

If you play it back from a DVD, you can. But if you're playing back from tape, from the camera, or any other way, it won't work.

The DVD player is what changes the shape of the video for a 4:3 TV. So burn your 16:9 footage to a DVD and play it, and yes it'll do what you want. But only if you're playing it back from a DVD.

Thanks for your responses Barry. This is a subject that I know is very simple but just hasnt caught on for me yet. Could you explain or perhaps forward me to a internet resources where the differences between squeeze and letterbox on dvd or tape are explained. I obviously understand aspect ratios, I just dont get how those two mentioned methods of attaining "widescreen" are acheived. THANKS!!

There's volumes written about it right here on this site. Just search, you'll find tons. The simplest answer is: Letterbox is 4:3 video, with black bars applied. Squeeze is 16:9 anamorphic video, but lower in resolution than the anamorphic adapter.

I go into it in extreme detail in the anamorphic adapter guide, and also in the new DVX Book/DVX DVD package (which includes the AA guide as a chapter). But if you want the nuts 'n' bolts, it's all here on the site somewhere...
