Question about stills and interlacing

Hi all,

This is probably a dumb question, but what is the optimal way to render out what is essentially a video slide show? I want to go to DVD with it for playback, and will just be using the standard Vegas MPEG encoder. My main questions are:

1) What frame rate and interlace settings are optimal/correct? Should I be rendering to 23.976 with progressive frames? (Vegas defaults to "lower field first" interlacing, but I was thinking that it would decrease the quality of my still shots if I allow them to be interlaced on output?) And what will be the effect of adding pulldown if I go to a 24p DVD? I'm assuming the DVD player will then just ignore the pulldown when it realizes it is playing a progressive DVD?

2) What pixel aspect ratio do I set both for the project and for the render? I'm getting confused about the fact that I'm working in a DV project, rendering to an NTSC-compliant format, but using source material with a 1:1 VGA ratio...

3) Would your answers to #1 and #2 above change if you knew the video also contains some small amounts of both 24p and 60i DV footage?

Sorry -- I can never seem to get this stuff straight in my head... Thanks for your help!

progressive is always the best encoding for stills.

So make a 24p DVD. The DVD will make the pulldown if you send out a 60i stream.
