Question about Red Render bars

I added a letterboxed effect to one of my clips but then decided to remove the letterbox. However, I still have the red render bars up there. Why do I need to render my already completed project over again? Well not the whole project but at least that clip. I have noticed this a lot when I add things to a timeline then remove them but the render bars stay.

Video files are big.

FCP isn't always as smart as it can be about preserving previous renders, but in general making changes to a clip will mean re-rendering. With each "level of undo" potentially taking up GBs of hard-drive space, there isn't really any other way.

(Except buy a fast G5 so you never have to render, like in Apple's demos?)
