question about monitor replacement...

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone knows if it'd be possible to use one of those cheapo dvd players or a small tv for a monitor to use for a monitor. I don't have the money to buy the real deal as i've got a shitload of other things to buy accessory wise and my only need for it is for crane shots, so i can see what i'm shooting. I was told there may be an issue shooting in 24p with using consumer stuff like this. If anyone can help that'd be great, also if anyone could point me to an appropriate unit if i do indeed need something specific that'd be great! Sorry for being a newbie, and thanks for the help in advance!

I don't think you even need the DVD player, just a mini TV monitor. As long as it's got a Video In Jack (Yellow RCA cable), you should be good. I don't see how 24p would be a problem, it should work the same as watching 24p footage on your regular TV. With that said, a long RCA cable might be a problem. I've seen long RCA's wreak havoc on the picture. If that's the route you go, don't rely on your little monitor as what's going to tape. Instead, I'd get a BNC cable and some RCA adapters for the ends. Hope that helps.

true, you don't need a dvd player but i have one and one advantage is, they usually come with a nice battery. mine is rated for 4 hours of dvd viewing but if only using as a monitor it lasts around 8 hours, all day. mine is an rca with the dvd tray that pops out the side so it's not a flip-open type. it also came with a case and straps to hook to a car headrest. this comes in handy if using with a jib. just hang it anywhere. i got mine for $200 on ebay new. it also came with video in cables. the actual video in is a mini plug so the cable is rca to mini. i just use a headphone extension cable for long reaches. the whole thing works great.
