question about Letterboxing in post

Im about to start my first dvx project with a few friends and was wondering about the benefits of letterboxing myfilm in post.

What I'd like to do is shoot full frame and then play with my framing in post. Is this possible? Do i need a special program? Can FCP do it? Also, if i can, how difficult is it to stbilize using this technique?

thanks 8)

Re: question about Letterboxing in post

Any non-linear editor can letterbox your clips.

Letterboxing just means making a TIFF or BMP or other graphic file and using that as a mask over your video. Black areas stay black, and white are see-through.

You've got to get the right size of bars though, depending on whether your production is 16:9, 1.85, etc. Search this forum for other posts about it.

cool link john.

Cheesesailor77, yes, you can totaly reposition the frame vertically under a letterboxing frame. its a great way to give or take away headroom from a shot, or even animate it to look like a tilt.

letterboxing also helps out when your are stabilizing as well, cause it will cover up areas that go in and out of frame. the only downside is the unless the footage you are stabilizing is only moving vertically, then you will also be coming in on the sides as well. so you might have to scale the image up a tad so that it fills the frame.
