Question about letterbox for cinemas

Hello all,

I really like the site and the wealth of info here. I am a new proud owner of the dvx100Bp. I was thinking that whenever I was done my first movie in the future, if I shot it in letterbox, that I could show it sometime in a theater that had a digital projector. Would there be any problems with this in terms of resolution on screen? I would think that rather than using the widescreen avenue, that wth the letterbox in a theater the black bars would be invisible anyways over the top and bottom of the screen making the movie look like it was shot in widescreen without letterbox. Any ideas? I was just wondering because I am planning for an upcoming movie shoot next year, and was looking at using letterbox mode because mainly the movie would be for sale on DVD, and realizing most people have 4:3 tvs. Thanks. P.S. I am not under the illusion that my movie will be in theaters, I just mean if I organized a screening at one or a handful of places.

with a digital projector like say the christie cp2000 you would need dvi or smpte connections and if not they do have another unit for component connections...ah but you can investigate that with your local theater.

let me correct you on one thing...if you shoot letterbox it will show as letterbox. if you want to fill the screen then you need to shoot either with the anamorphic lens or in squeeze mode. however you can shoot letterbox and then adjust the height of the video to stretch it and that will also fill the screen.

the frame format you need to fit is 1920x1080.

Ok thank you very much. Seems like I am better off just shooting in 16:9, that will work for a cinema screening as well as 16:9 and 4:3 tvs on dvd.
