Question about H.264 300kbps streaming
Is there any way to determine the file size of the H.264 300kbps streaming output before it is converted? I have a long (33:50) EX1R 1080P video which I converted in Compressor to 720 at medium quality because I worried it would be too large to upload i=on Vimeo at a higher quality settings. It took over 6 hours to output and is only 689 MB, but the quality is not a good as I wanted, so I am outputting it now at the next higher quality level. It will be another 6 hours or so, and only then will I know the size.
Is there any way to determine the file size before I hit Submit in Compressor?
Is there another way to convert a file for the web that will give me equivalent quality in a shorter length of time? I am using an older Dual core MacPro with 8 GB RAM. Does a newer (faster) computer make much difference in the output time?
Thanks!

Here is a bitrate calculator, type in the numbers and you'll get a file size:

http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm

If you do a 1-pass vbr encode you can save time, but your quality will drop. You'll have to use more bits to to get the same file quality as you would from a 2-pass.

Honestly at 720P video you'll want about 4-8 Megabits per second minimum on the video track if you want a good encode. Vimeo does a re-encode of your source anyway, so you might as well feed Vimeo the largest file size you possibly can.

Based off the 500MB file upload limit Here is the number I calculated for bitrate:

546Kbps video rate
128Kbps Audio rate

This rate might be acceptable for 640x360 at 23.976 fps only if you used the most efficent x264 encoder possible. I sugguest you upgrade to vimeo pro so that you don't have a limit on your upload, or try to split up your video into multiple chunks and tell your users to switch between them if you want HD quality.
