Question about flouro vs tungsten?

Ok so I got some lights from my place of business, they're very nice to help me out.
I'm trying to figure out how much light output these flouros I got is.

They are boxes, about 26 inches wide by 14 inches high by 9 inches deep.

The bulbs it uses are 60 watts each. They are in a U shape and run the full length of the box.

The box holds 3 bulbs.

Now I didn't realize that the lightoutput was different by wattage between tungsten and flouro. I just thought wow, 60x3 being 180, this is CRAZY brighter than the 150 watt tungsten barrel light I have over there.

So can anyone tell me about what level of light / comparable tungsten wattage I'm seeing outta this guy?

Also, the light makes zero noise and has zero flicker. Does that mean it has electronic ballasts? How would I tell?

These lights are usually used in tv news studios for lighting.

THanks :)

It's roughly 4x the output per watt when comparing fluorescents to tungsten. If there's no flicker or hum, it sounds like you're right in that they are electronic ballasts.

I really do wanna know if the lights i have are good enough to light with.

I can't seem to find anywhere that has MY lights on it.

The closest I could find for sale is this:

However thats not exactly mine. Mine is deeper and has three bulbs.
If you look in this picture, mine is the one on the bottom right: The triple 55 watt bulb one with barn doors and silver backing.

So what do you think, is this ok to light with? I have 3 of these setups.

Thanks :)

Mailbox cleaned out, so any word on these lights? Are these ok to shoot with enough so I don't need to rent lights?

I lit a music vid a few years back with a truckload of those Videssence lights. They're pretty good, but a little bulky. Not as portable as Kino Flo. Because of their bulkiness, they can't be nailed into the ceiling like a lightweight Kino Flo with remote ballast, but they are fine lights in every other regard. They were VERY expensive when they were new about 20 years ago -- like a $1000 each. The company when out of business in the 90's.

If for some reason they won't turn on, make sure all the U-tubes are in their sockets, then check to see if the fuse is good. They use the same kind of fuses as your car, those little 5amp buggers, I think. Might keep an extra on hand, just in case.

Also, you might want to put some sort of diffusion gel on them. They are a little more "punchy" than most Kino Flo's; not as soft a quality of light... Shadows are a little harder, not my taste...

In any case, these lights are every bit as good as CaseLights, Diva-Lite's, Flo-Lights, etc. If you got them for free, then you got a deal!

kickarse, well thats good to know. Lighting has been one of my biggest concerns.

You're write they are pretty bulky, I may try and build some custom stands for them, and definitely gel them. Thanks for the input!
