Question about DaVinci Resolve...

I'm working on a short film where someone doing the color is using DaVinci Resolve. I haven't started using it yet, just watched a few tutorials, but was curious if after they do the color for the project are they able to send me any type of files so that I can open up the same project and all of their color corrections and grading is all in tact?

I'm trying to avoid having to go to this person anytime I need to make an adjustment or need to render out a different size, a different variation of the same project, etc.

The short answer is yes. The long answer is you really need to discuss this with your colorist, regardless of which platform they use.

The even longer answer is that people who ask me this make me run away from them because they have a habit of not paying.

I'm not saying that I expect you're going to stiff your colorist. But I am saying that the vast majority of other people who ask this kind of question do.

BTW, color & mix are typically done at the very end of the post production process. So your picture should be "locked" before you go to color and mix, and this is not usually a problem.

And, again, the people who most often have this problem also seem to have a huge problem paying the people who do this kind of work for them.

Not saying that you won't pay anyone, but still, I'd really want a sizable deposit up front from you. If I even was willing to work with you.

Not saying... But still...

Ok great. The person doing the coloring for me is doing it as a favor so there's no pay, no need to "stiff" anybody, etc. I was just checking to see if it was possible since I haven't really gotten into it yet, still watching tutorials on it. I want to be able to make any tweaks if necessary.

Does it matter if they have the $1k version and I have the free version? Or would I need to get the $1k version as well in order to share files, etc.

The short answer is that it depends on what they do to the files, check the comparison list to see the types of things left out of the free version.

If this friend is local, you should ask if you can come watch so you see what is involved, might be better than YouTube videos.
