Question About Cool Light's 256 LED's

Hey All-

We've been using various Cool Lights for a while now, but we recently had a problem with two of our 256 LED's and I'm curious if anyone has had a similar experience.

We mainly use our 256's off battery power. (HPX170 Batteries, with the plates supplied by Cool Lights) Two of our lights began to experience a flicker and then about a week later we the batteries would no longer power the lights. When we took a closer look we noticed the battery connections had melted both on the plates and on the batteries. Both the plates and batteries were destroyed. Both melted on the positive terminal.

These same batteries operate on our HPX170 without any problems. In fact, one of our batteries that was ruined was a Panasonic battery.

So here's the question... Has anyone else had a similar incident?

Thanks,
Ryan

hi ryan,

have you emailed richard. he is pretty good at getting on to things.

my 600's have flickered but only when the voltage drops in the battery.

i run mine on 6 amp hour 12volt lead acid batteries. those babies will run them for 2 1/2 hours.

the only thing i can think of is you had a loose battery connection and created an arc across the terminals.
cheers
ian

Thanks Ian. We have heard from him in mid July. He got some new battery plates and we haven't heard anything more till now. If you have some other issues, its best to contact us at info@coollights.biz. Whatever the original issue was with your batteries, we haven't been able to reproduce it with our test batteries. I would recommend sending at least one of your batteries in so we can take a look at it.

Battery Issues

Richard-

I'll get you the batteries and the plates. I'll mail them to your attention. After talking to Matt at McGee, I just wanted to survey the group and see if anyone else has run into this problem.

When I opened up the old battery plates I noticed on one the positive wire had come lose and was touching the ground terminal. On the other bad plate the solder from the positive actually touches the ground (center contacts). I'm guessing this is where the short came from.

We use the same batteries on our cameras without any problems, so I'm guessing it's in the plate.

I should note, this problem was only on the 256 LED. The AB plates on the 600's work just fine.

Thanks,
Ryan

Thanks for your comments. I don't live or work in the USA except for 1 month a year. Whenever sending anything to a company you always want to get an RMA, so write in to info@coollights.biz requesting an RMA so we can make sure you have the proper address and "attention to" to send them to. Our customer service and support will take care of it. Thanks.

+1 on Richards post sale service
he shipped me replacements for a dislodged LED batt plate really fast
and his staff in the US talked me thru the installation via phone

Thanks Jhoe. We made the interfaces on all our LED units as separate pieces so they would be modular and easily changeable in the field, especially if the customer changes batteries from one type to another so they don't have to send in the whole product. We just send them a new interface and its easy to change.
