Question about capturing video without using camera...

I would like to transfer/capture my video to FINAL CUT without using my camera, I'm not sure how those things are called...are they called DV DECK? Where can I find one?

dv decks or you can find them at a site like b&h under pro video -> vcr's. They are very expensive, you'll be lucky to find something around 1,000 dollars. Most spike up from there. I personally don't understand why they can't make them cheap.

The alternative that a lot of people do is use another consumer camcorder as just a deck. It will still import in 24p footage, and you can usually find a camera for under 1,000.

With HDV that becomes a bit tricky however, because everyone has their own form of HDV. You can't play sony hdv through JVC or vice versa.

If you have a dvx, i'd suggest getting one of those panny consumer 3ccd cams for under a grand, it won't be 24p but you could also use it as a b-cam in tight situations.

I use a mini dv camera that I bought at Circuit City for $139. works fine so far.

I'm very close to buying an HVX200. What would be the easiest/cheapest way to log and capture footage (from tape) onto FCP Studio on the newest IMac. I'll probably shoot most of my stuff in SD now, but I'd like to know how to capture HD footage as well.

The guy at the Panasonic dealer told me that I'd have to get some program to turn the video files into files that Final Cut would recognize. Any recommendations on this?

Also, this is a dumb question, but is there any disadvantage to just shooting onto tape until the p2 prices come down and apple becomes a little more P2 friendly?

Tell your salesman not to comment on things he doesn't know about. Just kidding. FCP makes the P2 data into QuickTime files all by itself, you don't need any other software. It won't read native P2 files, but can do what is called re-wrapping.

You have to record to P2 cards or an FS-100 at present to get HD material from the HVX. The Cineporter will also work when it's finally released some time in the near future, we hope.

Mini-DV tape will get you SD material, but not HD.
