What are the uses of a ball leveler, how do you use it, and has anyone had an experience of event videography with a ball leveler tripod just destroying every shot or is there a way to get around this?
Ball leveler is extremely useful because it lets you center your tripod head so the picture isn't tilted. Trying to do this by adjusting the tripod leg is nearly impossible. Using it is as simple as loosening the handle, tilt the head to where you want it and tighten. Not sure what you mean by the leveler ruining shots but it's a tool that I can't be without.
From your description, I can't understand how tightening that handle will set the ball in place, and prevent it from moving around while you pan and shoot.
It's simple, the "bowl" that the ball sits on allows it to rotate to a certain extent. The screw simply applies friction against the bowl so that it doesn't move. It's easier to try it than to explain it.
