Question about AE 4.5

A friend of mine gave me a copy of AE 4.5. I know it's old and can't do nearly what newer versions can, but I thought it would be a good way to get to know the program.

I have a PC with a 1.4gig processor, 768 megs of RAM and a total of 180gigs of hard drive space between 2 drives. (one for apps, one for storage) And I use Adobe Premeire 6.5 for editing.

Now for my problem. When I bring up the program I get the following:
After Effects warning: 38 plug ins could not be loaded because the hardware key could not be found (glow, alpha levels, flange and chorus, high low pass, modulator, parametric eq, reverb, tone, 3D channel extract, bezier warp, bulge, color diff
First of all, what does that mean? Second, what can I do about it?
Any help would be great.

Re: Question about AE 4.5

In addition, when I import a file, I can't get any of the effects to work. When I go to the tool bar and the effects menu comes up, they are all grey. DO I need to do something else first, or is this related to the above error message.

Sorry to be such newbie about this. Thanks

Re: Question about AE 4.5

Well assuming evreything is legal (i don't know what "my friend gave me a copy" really means...) AE is simply telling you that the those plugins are not properly installed in your system (this happens when you simply copy a plugin folder insted of doing a proper installation).

there's no dongle or hardware key for AE (no that i recall...) or any of the plugins (Pro Bundle or third party... again no that i'm aware of) it's only serial numbers that you get when you purchase the product.

Re: Question about AE 4.5

He used to use it doing videography. He now focuses on his photography and said he didn't use it anymore and asked me if I wanted to give it a try. He warned me that it was outdated, but gave me the registration number. I assume that's legal.
What do you mean by a "proper installation" I put the CD in and did "autorun" Inever installed a "plugin folder"

Re: Question about AE 4.5

glad it all works, i didn't mean to be rude in my "legal concern" but copied or cracked versions of softs are often bad.

I'm no Adobe related or whatever and what you do is your own promblem...

Good luck ln your learning curve, 4.5 is really out of date and can not even be compared to newer versions 'especially 6.5) but it'll gives you the basics. Nevertheless i encourage you to download a free demo of AE 6.5 to give a real try .

Re: Question about AE 4.5

Thanks for your help and advice. I'll look into 6.5.
No offense taken. I'm a stickler for copyright myself. As much for ethical as practical reasons.
