I’m setting up a small video podcast/newscast studio in a university classroom with 8’drop ceilings and I’m looking at using some 4’ LED fixtures to light. I think, I’ll need at 2-3 for the front & probably 1-2 for backlight. Lights will likely be 7-9’ from the talent. I want it to look professional, meaning there needs to be enough light, with accurate color/High CRI, no flicker, and the fixtures/mounts should at least look semi-professional.
I was impressed at what I saw at Quasar Science’s NAB booth, so I’m considering putting together Quasar/Kino like setup. Something similar to the http://www.supersecretfilmblog.com/blog/2017/3/29/quasars-in-kinos
Putting six T12 4’ Q-LED’s in a Kino Shell, cutting a few minor corners like SecretFilmBlog, should provide a 300W T12 Q-LED fixture, with switchable bi-color LED’s for around $1800, with a lollipop mount, ready to hang. That price beats the off the shelf unit available directly from Quasar for a 4’/6Bank in the Kino Shell going for $2250. Granted official Quasar/Kinos use the crossfade lamps rather than the bi-color switch lamps, but that is a $450 price difference.
I was also thinking that because this is for a studio setup, where we’ll probably set it & forget it, I don’t really need bi-color, adjustable barn doors or dimming other than during initial setup, if I need to dim or barn door at all. Therefore I’m considering buying an off the shelf T8, eight bulb, no ballast/ballast bypass generic fixture, that I can rig with a lollipop mount, and filling it with the Quasar Q-LED Dimmable T8 lamps.
Maybe something like: https://www.prolighting.com/b4208ssumxx0000.html
That would result in a 300W T8 Q-LED fixture, ready to hang for around $800. Granted it’s 60W less than the T12 4’/6Bank Q-LED setup, but it’s also $1000 cheaper.
So if my math is right, to get 1200W of Q-LED light in the little studio, it would cost me $9000 ($2250x4) for the official Quasar/Kino mod, or $7200 (4X$1800) for the DIY Quasar/Kino mod, or $4000 for the DIY T8 Quasar/Generic mod.
The $4000 tops out my lighting budget out anyway, so the other alternatives aren’t even a consideration. Does this scenario sound reasonable? The Q-LED’s are rated at 90+ Lumens/watt, but I haven’t seen any real world measurements, particularly between the T12’s & the T8’s. I know that Quasar Science isn’t the only possible solution, but are there other LED or Fluorescent lighting setups that fit this situation I should consider?
Anybody tried the Quasar T8 Dimmables in a fixture?
