Quasar Science Q-Lion battery powered tube fixtures

Erik,

I’ve used the previous version of battery powered Quasars on a number of occasions, & find them very useful. Been trying to buy some for quite awhile but they’ve been out-of-stock as Quasar updated the design.

In the review you noted that these new Quasar lamps cannot be charged while running, which is a limitation the previous model didn’t seem to have, or at least one Gaffers ignored. Also believe any USB charger would work. Any idea what’s changed?

I dont know technacally why other than a good guess would be they have a higher amp battery in the new model and the new chargers cant power the fixture. It is a bummer they cant be used with AC power but 4 hours of run time is impressive.

Can’t find the details for the batteries, but (AFAIK) since they’re “installed” even the 24” meets the FAA specs for checked baggage. And for extra piece of mind the 18” fit carry-on.

PS according to the specs the charger appears to output 9V 2A via a USB 3.0 cable.

These do seem super handy... but for me, the non AC capability means I won't spend $ for them. Every single rechargeable battery powered thing I've ever bought, from high to low end...no matter the promise of brilliant battery performance always, and I mean always, stops performing as it did originally. Certainly some die quicker deaths than others.

What were they thinking on the power scheme. A non-removable battery in a fixture you can't plug into a wall receptacle and use. WTF?

I don't care how wonderful the light quality is, that is a total non-starter for me.

Waiting on the Q-Rainbow tubes. I want a bunch of 4' and 8' units to use as practicles/background elements and it seems like the Digital Sputnik Voyagers are hung up in indigogo(or whatever) limbo.

I've been using Quasar tubes for last couple of years and a big fan. Haven't gotten into the battery operated versions, but they have entirely replaced Kino tubes in all applications where we'd use those.

I'm going to get some of the T8 5600K 2' and 4' models now. I'm sold on tube lighting. We have a few Diva lights and it's tempting to retrofit them but Matthews has these MyWay plates that are pretty affordable and look like a better option. Much lighter and less bulk. Only issue is no barn door like the Diva has to control spill. I suppose thats an easy DIY fix.

Would you say the 2-foot models are twice as bright as a Kino Flo Diva tube? How much brighter are they? The 2' Q-Lion are pretty dang bright. Surprised me.
