Quantum of Solace

Well, obviously this was not nearly as awesome as Moonraker, or You Only Live Twice, where Sean Connery plays Bond as Bond going undercover as a Japanese fisherman.

All kidding aside, I agree with a lot of the criticisms already mentioned, but none of the bad points were enough to kill the thrill. I liked this film. Not as great as some of the all-time action classics, but an entertaining and fun action/James Bond experience. I'd put this one about equal to Casino Royale. CR had more character development, but QoS moved along more fluidly. Definitely more action than CR. I didn't have any problems with the Bourne-style action camera-work, but I never did with the Bourne films either. I would rank the newer Bond films, along with some of the classic ones like Goldeneye a bit below the Bourne trilogy and better than the Tom Cruise Mission Impossible trilogy.

Daniel Craig makes an awesome Bond. Kinda reminds me of Timothy Dalton's Bond, dark, dangerous, and possibly able to go overboard if pushed that far. Connery and Brosnan were more about the charm and womanizing but could still get the job done. Mark Forster did a good job with the action, which is not something he is used to doing.

The Hollywood Reporter lists the budget for QoS as an estimated $230 million. Maybe that is including the marketing budget, but wow, that's a lot more than I would have thought it cost to make.

Saw it again tonight (and going this Tuesday as well) and I liked it a LOT more... Loved it in fact... everything worked for me.

I am a fan of Bourne Identity... but never liked the second two...

I enjoy the "re-booted Bond" franchise infinitely more than the Bourne series... though the Bourne series is more "real" I just find the new Bond flicks have that perfect balance of real, and fun at the same time! :)

While I like the Bourne series better overall, the new Bond series is maybe a bit more entertaining. The Bourne series is not as slick and Jason Bourne is not a character I would like to see recast and reused in a bunch more films. Bourne Ultimatum wrapped things up perfectly and I can't see any reason besides profits for there to be another Bourne film. Bond's strengths have always been that the character is larger than life, so it is not a problem to have more than one actor jump into his shoes. Reminds me of Doctor Who in that regard.

Another thing is that the Bourne films (not necessarily the Ludlum books) were a direct reaction to the more unbelievable aspects of the Bond series. Now we've come full circle with the Bond films attempting a more realistic tone, which I think works beautifully. Kind of a cool evolution of the espionage-action thriller.

The real question is... who would win in a fight between Jason Bourne (M. Damon) and James Bond (D. Craig)?

Are you kidding? Bond would have a drink, set it down, smoke a cig, throw the cig up in the air, stomp the ever loving sh!t out of Bourne, catch the cig on its way down, take a puff and continue on with his drink.

or

Bourne would take the cig, burn out Bond's eye, turn the drink into a molitov cocktail, and then grab a pen and comence to stabbing Bond in every sensative area. Then he would stomp off into the shadows.

The fight would begin, the camera would begin to shake, and both men would fall to the ground with Japanese youth-like seizures. Then I would swoop in, grab the drink, the pen, and the hottie chick hiding under a desk for protection, take a snort off the drink, kiss the ever loving sh!t out of the hottie, and begin writing about my great luck, whilst kicking them both about the head and shoulders.

Maybe Hollywood can give us a spinoff film of BOND vs. BOURNE? Couldn't be any worse than AvP. Matt's already got a couple of log lines ready to go.

I really liked the mentions of real life foreign domestic policy with Haiti, Bolivia, and Venezuela. I learned a lot about some of that stuff this year in my classes, was very cool to see it introduced to the public.

The cutting and action scenes could have been slightly different, the flaws, if you could call it that, weren't large enough to ruin them though. I could have used a few longer cuts between shots and the camera could have been wider to display the more realistic nature of what was happening.

Great popcorn flick, thoroughly enjoyable experience that deserves a theater viewing.

I wish we all had a little "bubble chart" under our avatars... kind of like a color correction circle, but with dots that concentrate around the kind of movies we like the best (based on a 20-50 movie constant). That would be a great way to see how a person's opinion on a film meshes with your own taste.

Now go pass on that million dollar idea.

About Bond... I'll be seeing it this week for certain... maybe even tonight. This is a flick that I want to see by myself... with no concern for my lady's enjoyment of the movie... or the outside commentary of some mediocre friend. :)

Just saw it...

For me (and I'm 22 so "my Bond" is Brosnan) it wasn't Bond. And I might even go with this angry, pissed off character but... These movies were (for me) comedy/action/sex/high-tech with a touch of drama and reality and last two were too realistic for me.

I loved that even after the biggest fight Brosnan's suit was "straight-from-dry-cleaners". And he had cheesy punchline after each scene. And he could seduce a woman with one word. And open every door with a custom-build credit-card.

When I first saw Craig in Casino Royale in the opening scene (with this amazing chase - this is still my fav Casino scene) I thought to myself - "Why is this guy wearing hawaiian shirt?"

For me it was sad. Not because it was a bad movie (CR and QoS were both good movies) but I felt like someone took my childhood hero and made him weak: he's got no class, no style; no fineness - he's just a cold-blooded killer. And Bond was never JUST a cold-blooded killer... Even his gadgets created an atmosphere of a character beyond standards, a character so many people fell in love with - because he was so different - you couldn't have said: he's just like Bourne... And now... I saw QoS - a good movie with lots of action without a heart of a hero...

Sorry - this text is probably very chaotic but I'm kinda sad :(

I'm gonna watch The World Is Not Enough now :)

I'm 23... Bronson is not, and never was "my Bond" and never could stand him, for all the reasons you listed above... it's a shame :(

He was in the books. I really like the realistic assassin Bond much more than the superhero with the invisible car Bond.

Agreed. Goldeneye was good. Everything else with Brosnon got progressively worse.

Agreed. Goldeneye was good. Everything else with Brosnon got progressively worse.

They did seem determined to introduce him well, and then just make the movies more and more ridiculous. That is until that hit Die Another Day, which for me has the "Batman & Robin effect" of just being so ridiculously over the top that it's just awesome to watch. Oddly enough, both movies revolve around satellites that can focus the sun's energy into one spot.

Goldeneye and Casino Royale are my #1 and #2 Bonds. Martin Campbell seems oddly well suited to James Bond despite not having any "great" movies outside the series. Hopefully he'll come back again.

No secret here, Craig is my favorite Bond ever. He'd beat the crap out of all of the other guys and Bourne at the same time.

Casino Royale, although not my favorite Bond film is killer.

Favorite Bond films:

The Spy Who Loved Me
Thunderball
For Your Eyes Only
Casino Royale
Goldeneye
Licence to Kill
The Living Daylights
Tomorrow Never Dies
Moonraker
