quality loss in render and re-render?

i render an mpeg2 of my project
i drop said mpeg2 into a timeline
i make color corrections
i then render another mpeg2 from that

will there be any loss in quality?

Yes. MPEG-2 is a lossy codec, so you will suffer generational degradation. If you are going to proceed with this method, I would render at the highest bitrate possible on that first render. It would be better to work with a DV source when doing your color correction. Is the video originating as an MPEG-2 stream? For example: footage from a DVD camcorder?

Yeah, I can't imagine why you'd want to render before you color-correct.

Besides, you change your color space from 4:1:1 to 4:2:0 when you go from DV to MPEG-2 (besides the intra-frame vs. interframe compression), and while it's the same amount of color information, it acts differently.

actually i lost the VEG file and only have the mpeg2 that i renderred the last time i worked on it. and i have an older VEG file that is about 2 weeks behind the mpeg2. :( i guess i'll have to go through the older VEG file and update it to what i see in the mpeg2. bummer.

Well, I ripped some VOB files I did of some older stuff and color-corrected it, and it worked out OK -- except I only rendered at 320x240. If you're looking to go back to DVD, yes, you'll see some quality loss. But if you're looking to put something on the web a lower resolution, you might be OK.
