Qs regarding tripod and mic for the dvx100

hey guys, first of all i have had many sleepless nights because of this forum.... reading heaps and heaps and then re reading hehe..

anyway i have decided to get the dvx100ae (i cant wait any more.. was gonna wait after NAB but i doubt it would change the price and if a new replacement came out it probably wouldnt be for another 6-8mth down here in AU)

so anyway was initially gonna purchase from one of those importing companies but im too scared (being a student the value of 4-6KAU is my entire savings hehe).

so i have looked local in AU and have come across a package which includes the AGMC100 MIC - now i was wandering (doing a search only brough stuff on the JVC cams)

does anyone know the value of this mic ?
but more importantly is it good enough to perhaps be attached to a boom and used for a movie (weather it be a short or feature) - the fact that it is stereo kind of worries me as most boom mics i have used have been mono

Now the other Q is...

in this package is manfrotto 503/055 head and tripod

guaging from price this is a pretty high (well compared to my 100 sony :))

i was wandering if anyone has done a comparison with the libec th650 -

the idea of a claw head seems really good for leveling, how is the leveling done with the manfrotto - does it have a similar design? - im just wandering if i should perhaps ask for the tripod to be taken out of the package and take the money to by the libec which is cheaper...

Hope u guys dont mind me askign these Qs - i have searched the forum as thoroughly as i could but have not found the answer i look for...

if the Qs can not be answered it's cool - ill go down in a couple days to check the gear out as - i actually have to plan the trip cos it's an hour or so away and i dont have a car... but heck that's another story hehe

Try mic shopping in Australia with RODE, made in your Aussie backyard and of excellent quality. They have out a new shotgun mic that I assume will be excellent.

Yes the 503 is more than enough for a fluid head ( it'll serve you for many years). The 501 is good also, but w/o the tilt springs. Set your drag fairly heavy and practice for a few weeks barely moving it. Also you can use a rubber band and attach it to the handle and pull that for smooth start & stops.

Tripod...just look for something robust, but not so heavy you won't pick it up and walk three blocks. I suggest a bowl head mount (it's a circle shape type bowl the head rest on that allows leveling adjustment, VERY IMPORTANT) If not a bowl mount, Bogen/maffrotto makes a small mount type mechanism for under the head that allows for leveling adjustment. Get one or spend endless energy adjusting your legs for a level shot set up. I use a Bogen 3181. Center post sticks are also nice for quick pedistal hieght adjustments. Consider this also.

thx for the reply 10s - the only issue is i am not sure HOW configurable the package is...

regarding the 501/055 package - is this a bowl type that u recommend (i do not think it is because it looks like it has that central column u are talkin about)

10s do you have any knowledge of the pansonic mic i posted? i wasnt intending on getting one but realise i needed to, so if it part of the package and is considered ok... i'm just getting my head around the camera and other accessories and now i have to think about the mic hhehe man... while it is enjoyable it's also headache enducing...

Don't go with a panasonic mic...they don't make mics. That's like buying a car from Coca Cola. Get the RODE or Sennhieser, AKG, Audio Technica...not panasonic. If it's part of a package deal...well it's probably OK. ...I'm not a fan of most package deals. Often these are SUCKER Punches to sell you some good gear for an appearing low cost and then they sell some junk for a higher price included...or some configuration like that. Don't rush into your purchase, take some time and work it out, especially if you're not rolling in cash.

A column post tripod is fine ( I have both), just get the leveling device (Manfrotto) or you're in for too much work leveling your shot. i have no idea what a 055 tripod is (that shouldn't be a surprise) just find a good Bogen, they're inexpensive and work well. the others cost too much for too little of a return. When you make big bucks some day then it might be worth stepping up, but then you'll probablly just keep it simple.

again thx for the reply 10s - apparently this package just came out and the cost of the tripod/head setup from what i have seen goes for 600-800AU alone i think that is a reason i am looking at the package -but ya.. i aint gonna rush in... i've waited quite a while, so there is no point rushing now..

regardin the tripod....

apparently manfrotto rename there tripods in the US as bogen... not sure which tripod would be the one i would get though.... so many 055s

Justin, the 755B is a very good light weigh tripod leg. I got one since few weeks and it pretty well done, just be carefull when you do a pan to not having to much pression because it is light and the legs can have a very little torsion. But it is perfect if you go outland.

I almost bought the 755. I was verrrrry tempted. I especially liked the idea that you could remove the center column and replace it horizontally. That's great for over head shots, as well as POV shots if someone is lying down. It's light, but sturdy. In the end I went with the 3246 because I didn't like the idea of the legs being a single shaft. I was afraid of that torsion during panning that Shadow mentioned. It might have been fine, but I didn't want to take the chance.

vjbrennan, there was a little torsion the first time, but my head fluid drag had too much pression, now it is perfect. But I bough this one as my light tripod and it will never be as stiff as a double shaft leg. The head adjustment and center column removing are a very nice features.
