When it works, its awesome. Problem is it only works about once a week.
I'm been fighting with Qmaster preferences now for the past few hours. Just yesterday i got my Mac Pro 8Core to create a Virtual Cluster with 8 instances. And my, did it render mighty quickly.
Now i have to re-submit one of the files i worked on yesterday, but when i try to start the quick cluster back up again, it starts, but doesn't appear in the batch monitor or in Compressor 3.
So i tried to do the Cluster with services method. Jump into Quadministrator and there is my cluster... Ok. drag it to the window, Up comes Untitled Cluster. Give it a name. Select my controller (the very same computer) and hit apply.....
Sometimes this works. But sometimes, like today it doesn't. While its saving the settings, a duplicate cluster suddenly appears in the cluster node window. When i try to click on this 2nd ghost cluster, I'm asked to save settings or not. No matter what option i choose, one cluster ends up with the services and the controller and the other one is just a ghost name.
The cluster still doesn't show up in the batch monitor.
I can't make any changes to the cluster containing the services and controller, it tells me that "The cluster is being changed by someone else or cannot be reached."
I can delete the ghost cluster, but my services and controller are still locked into the other cluster that i can't get to.
There are then only two ways to clear that out. I can stop sharing qmaster in the preferences, or i can go into the terminal and type in
qmasterprefs -reset
which resets all the settings throwing my serrvices back to the bottom window and freeing up the controller once again..
FYI if anyone ever finds that their instanced become "captured" and you can't seem to get them back, going to terminal and typing that command in will free them back up again. Thats one thing that has worked every time. And thats happened to me quite a lot.
So this happens over and over; bouncing back from trying quick clusters and managed clusters, not getting anything to work.
Yesterday i just simply started to share a quick cluster and bam...... So far Apple Qmaster is not living up the the apple motto of "It Just Works" Cause it doesn't. Only when it wants too.
Its quite a love hate relationship with Qmaster.....
I hope I'm not alone in this frustration. I have 4 8Core Mac Pros and all of them do the same exact behavior. Major extreme super grrrr.
