I've been trying to build a small DIY homedepot light kit. I first came up with a PVC light stand. There are some out there on the internet. This one built is a little light, but fine if you are just clamping on an aluminum work light. I've also tried to make everything so it can be taken apart and travel easier.

Light-weight PVC Light Stand:

I used 1" pipe for the main stand. Then 1/2" pipe inside it for a 2nd riser.
The 1" pipe is connected to the base by converting down to 1/2" and I used a screw on fitting so that I could screw the entire arm off.

1/2" PVC Pipe 10ft: $1.43 (4ft for riser, 6ft for legs)
1" PVC Pipe 5ft: $1.21 (comes in 2.35/10ft)
1/2" Cross Fitting: $1.21
1/2" Tee: $.30
1" to 1/2 conversion: approx $3.00

Chinese lantern mount:

Has to be adjusted based on the ball opening size. The one I have has two loops on one end which was perfect to hold it down with the bolts. In the picture I used just screws, but have bolts is better so you can bolt it down. It helps if the bottom is a bit larger to fit entire mount in w/o taking apart.

1/2 PVC pipe 2': $.28 (or 1.43 if you buy whole thing)
1/2 Cross Fitting: $1.21
1/2 Tee Fitting: (2) $.30ea/.60
1/2 End Cap: (2) $.26ea/.52
1/2 Elbow: $.36
Zip ties: $1.87 (use gaff tape ok)
Light fixture: $2?
1/4x2 bolt/nut: $.24
