Putting Video on the Web

I dont know if this should be asked in the Vegas forum but I just completed editing a 3min video in Vegas in 24p. I rendered it out to a Windows movie formatt and its aprox a 9 mb file. I also rendered to a QT at about the same file size. Do I need to purchase Sorensen software to compress this so I can upload to my website at a much smaller size or can Vegas do this? If Sorensen is the answer, which one should I get? They have various ones at different prices. The one I was considering was Sorenson Squeeze for Flash or do I need Sorenson Squeeze Compression Suite ? Big price difference. Thanks for the help because I am no Web geek.

You probably won't be able to get a much smaller QT in Vegas -- my suggestion would actually be to get QT7 Pro and use the H.264 options. You won't be able to get the same quality/filesize ratio as you can with WMV, but you'll be able to better than you would with Vegas.

David,
After reading the specs and so forth re Sorensen, would this be a better investment due to its ability to compress all types of files and better quailty?
I know its more money that QT P7?

Well, as with all things, it depends on how much you'd use it. I've never had issues with Vegas in terms of rendering the way I want with filesize and quality -- except with getting QTs down to an e-mailable filesize, which I almost never do. QT7 Pro has always been fine for QT files of manageble, but not necessarily e-mailable, size.

In my experience, for my uses, of course. If you think you'll be rendering a lot of video to a lot of different file formats, then it might be worth it -- though I'd also look at Procoder.

I have tryed to render in Vegas this 9mb file as a Wm file using the various options it has and the quality seems to get worse the more I do this. Could you explain the steps you would do when rendering a 3 min 24p widescreen project for the web?

Are you saying you've imported the 9mb WMV file back into Vegas and are trying to render THAT? Just like photocopies, the more generations you get into it, the worse it will get, to a degree ... especially the more compression you add each time.

If you've got goog quality, a 9mb 3 min. video file is pretty good. Stick with what you have. If you look at the professional movie trailers, which are typically around 1-2 minutes, those can get clear up into 100+MB or more when going HD, but even 480x files are larger than 9mb ... so you're fine where you're at, in my opinion.

No. I rendered the clip once as a WMV9 at 3mbps. As I rendered the clip from the timeline again using 1mbps and so on, the clip loss quality but the file was a bit smaller. I couldnt even email the 9mb file. My DSL would hose up.

Try encoding at 320x480.

Also, tweak the seconds per keyframe. If you don't have a lot of motion or dissolves, you can go higher than the default 3, and it will be OK.
