Purchasing Lights & accessories for Video!???

I have an XL2 with just some basic lights. If I was looking to go for a nice package for lighting, stands, bounces or any kind of grip stuff, what do you recommend I check out?

Hopefully rreasonably prices as I build my work load up! Start for under $500 to $1000 if possible.

Thanks

This is asked pretty commonly. And the answers are necessarily pretty varied. It would be quite helpful to know what you intend to do with the lights. Interviews, short films, documentaries, etc. That will influence what is recommended.

"Packages" have some merit, but to be honest, finding flexible packages in the price ranges you're looking at is VERY hard. A decent light with a softbox and a good stand is going to put you right at the limit of your budget. Good stands, if purchased new, will put you in the $150 price range. Even with the most basic kit, you'll want at least 2. One for the light, and probably one for fill, whether that fill is another light or a piece of foamcore. So that's $300 and you haven't bought a light yet! :)

Something like this will get you in the game for the upper portion of your budget.

If you are more specific, we can be more specific.

Cool Lights is a site sponsor and we help DVXUsers all the time. We have lots of different options in different price ranges and we also have very energy efficient offerings which don't heat up your location like conventional "hot lights."

You can inquire at richard@coollights.biz or info@coollights.biz for more information.

Yeah, it's obviously geared towards a specific manufacturer's lighting kit, but it shows you what to look for to get certain results, and how to achieve a great look, so whatever you end up grabbing, I figured you might find it helpful.
