Pulsing Effect

I am working on a music video right now, and the band and I both think that for part of the song, a white matte should pulse with the beat. It is in 16:9, but I want some sort of rounded white shape to almost completely cover the frame and almost completely go white so probably an opacity of about 80%. My question is how can I execute such an effect? These will be short .5 second bursts.

I'd try exporting the shot and importing it into Motion.

There is a filter called Overdrive that does sort of what you are describing. I'd at least test it.

You should also just be able to create the white shape you are talking about in motion then keyframe the opacity to your liking.

So I exported into motion and I added overdrive to a part of the sequence, but i need to to occur multiple times. How do I do this because every time I drag it in, it just goes in the same place. Do I need to keyframe it? If so how do I?

What do you mean it goes to the same spot? If you open the motion file in the Viewer, place your playhead n the spot where you want the motn file to be, then over write- edit, apple- f10 (make sure the target track is the upper most layer without any other footage in it). This should place it there.

Depending on the effect your looking for, if its just an opacity (or size) change in the shape you can achieve that through keyframing. A quick lesson in key framing opacity-

-place the shape that you created in motion into your timeline.
-when in the timeline hit opt-w. this will make the opacity controls in video and level control in the audio appear
-if you move the line on the video down it decreases the opacity, up increases
-use the pen tool (by hitting p or from your tool bar) and click the line where you want the max opacity for the pulse to be. these dots are keyframes.
-once you have the keyframes marked, figure out how long you want the opacity "pulse to be".
-as an example, you want the shape to be at 80% opacity every second and be an even pulsing. this would make it be at 0% opacity every .5 sec (or 15 frames if in a 29.97 timeline). so you would want the keyframe at 1;00 to be at 80% opacity, at 1;15 be 0%, at 2;00 at 80%, etc. to change the value, mouse over with the pen tool till you see a + and drag it up or down.
-if the pulsing is irregular just make keyframes at every point you want the opacity to be different and adjust accordingly.

Let me know if this isnt working.
