Pulse the Kairo remake...

I have to say this looks like a remake that will out do the original, just like verbinski made a better Ring. Whoever did this one appears to have made a better Pulse (Kairo), Don't get me wrong I think it's pathetic how Hollywood has ripped off every Japanese movie since practically the beginning of film (ex. The Seven Samurai, (the Magnificent Seven), Yojimbo (Fist Full Of Dollars), The Hidden Fortress (Star Wars), to name a few of the less obvious ones.
In Kairo (the Original) There is a part whare a girl falls to her death from a tower, to this day I cant figure out how it was done. (It was all one shot).

Anyway here's the link, tell me what you think.

I reccomend trailer 2 in HD.

Hollywood didn't rip off Yojimbo...that was Italy (Leone).

I think this is going to be more schlock.

Kairo was an intelligent film. The only existential post-apocalyptic ghost story i can recall.

This remake looks like the same kind of garbage thats been passed off on audiences for years now.

I'm disgusted by this remake as a fan of kiyoshi kurosawa's original.

It's my hope that they leave seance and cure alone.

And also i wouldn't call fistful of dollars a hollywood remake it was shot in spain by italians one of whom is Sergio Leone who really needs no introduction as one of the greatest directors who ever lived. And thats not necessarily a fact just my opinion.

Nor would i call Star Wars, The Magnificent Seven or Dollars remakes since they adapted the story to completely different settings with different characters. Even changed plot devices up a bit.

Whereas the current trend seems to be direct remakes by way of americanization.

Ok, the only reason I called it Hollywood is because it's Clint, Who currently is Hollywoods posterboy. I think everybody knows Fistful of dollars is a spaghetti western (sorry for not being specific). That still doesn't change that it is a ripoff.

I believe this also.

We'll have to see I have high hopes, I'm still holding judgement.

Patience it's not out quite yet.

I thought Cure was phenominal some of his other films to me are so-so.

At least give credit whare credit is due.

I think that the fact that they changed the story a little and the names affirms they are ripoffs, and not remakes.
Whereas the current trend seems to be direct remakes by way of americanization.
These are remakes and admittedly so.

machinist sorry about quoting within your quote, I wasn't quite sure how to do this. Please read between the lines.

And Star Wars resembles The Hidden Fortress about as much as I resemble Kimko.
This is kind of hard for you to argue, since George Lucus flat out stated it was his Main inspiration for Star Wars. Not only that but compare the movies and characters side by side, (exactly similar).

Actually, Lucas said he decided to have Star Wars kinda-sorta seen from the perspective of two minor characters. And that's it. That was the inspiration.

But even that is irrelevent. Otherwise, every film seen from the perspective of the protagonist would be a ripoff of nearly every film that come before.

What characters to compare? Even just a basic quantity comparison only holds up with 1 damsel in distress (but not even the same kind of distress), and the 2 goofy-ish minor characters.

Wow.. you are really generalizing. Even if it wasn't for the R2D2/ C3PO (2 goofyish characters). I loved Star Wars far more than Hidden Fortress, but that is also besides the point. This thread was supposed to be about the REMAKE of Kairo (PULSE), but we've gotten off on a tangent. Have you watched the trailer and what do you think?

LOL that's funny, 'cause i got out of it more about the whole rip off point, rather tahn pulse...short of a link

it looks like the WB has got all the pretty people together and stuck them in a room to scream there heads off at all the ugly people.....original

when people say "hey, i used this movie as inspiration" or "im re-doing this movie" well then they are in the clear as far as i'm concerned, they are'nt hiding anything. it's when people try to hide it...that's got "rip off" written all over it.

"clint eastwood is hollywoods poster boy"......i hope that's not a negative, 'cause i think he is the total bomb, from back in the day till now

Movie Stunts fair enough. I'll wait for pulse to come out but if its turns out to be what i believe its going to be, judging from the trailer, i will revive this thread to tear it a new one.

And i still disagree with you regarding the remake issue.

Leone, and Lucas took themes, scenes, and or ideas from those movies and made them their own in an innovative way.

(and i refuse to accept any argument that tries to dispprove the innovation of either Star Wars or the Spaghetti Westerns)

Yes fistful and Yojimbo are almost identical however the feel and atmosphere of the two movies are very different given the time periods and cultures being portrayed. Which i feel gives fistful a weight and substance lacking from the current trend of asian horror redux. I see no weight or substance in most of these films in fact the worthwhile elements that can be found in the originals are usually sucked out (via studio influence i'm sure) and replaced with cheap scares, beautiful faces, and slick editing. And that upsets me.

When i see the pulse trailer thats the impression i get.

If i'm wrong i will gladly admit it right here publically.

So i guess now i have a reason to check this out.

If it turns out it sucks, I'll be right there with you! I was in your position when I heard of the Ring remake and i was pissed; when i saw it i was blown away, it was totally f@#$% brilliant. Now I have high hopes for remakes,... Granted, i've been let down most of the time. Because of this it will be very difficult for them to impress me. When I say I have high hopes I mean it!
I think remakes are the result of a lack of originality, unless you make it a masterpiece and a credit to the original, don't bother. Iv'e at least got to give the movie a fighting chance untill I see it.

You may be right about the WB actors... I don't watch T.V. strictly movies; is that who these actors are?
Don't get me wrong I love Clint, he's the only living actor with balls, but I have mixed feelings because Yojimbo was the bomb, and Toshiro Mifune was the man!

You have to think like the average movie-goer.

You know, the ones who never in a million years would go out and rent a Japanese movie, or a 30-year-old US film, or some obscure (to US folks, anyway) Spanish flick.

It just ain't gonna happen.

But...and it's still a maybe...they might go out now and rent Ringu, the original Omen, or Abre Los Ojos. Maybe.

Lack of originality? Sure. But they're not in the originality business, they're in the money-making business. Remakes are cheaper, (a bit) less risky, and have a built-in audience...even if that audience consists of people complaining about remakes. :)

You're absolutly right... And that's a sad thing about our society.:(

I hope it does. I fell asleep numerous times during the Japanese Pulse and still just don't get it. It wasn't creepy. It wasn't scary. And like a lot of Japanese horror movies, if you think about it long enough it just doesn't make any sense.

I differ with you in that I liked Ringu better. With the American ad campaign I was thinking it was going to be something else, I mean a different story/kind of movie (hadn't yet seen Ringu). The best thing that can be said about remaking foreign horror and maybe even older horror gems is that SOME people MAY go out and see the original or see more of another country's movies....maybe even one with.... *gasp* subtitles.

I enjoy watching another culture's take on horror. I find it fascinating. Often there are pieces of information that us as outsiders don't know and they take for granted so as not to included lengthy explainations.

My favorite Japanese horror movie is a toss up between Dark Water and Premonition.

Dark Water was great(the original) the remake was $@*$%&)^$# insert explitive. I wasn't too impressed with Premonition.
Have you seen One Missed Call? (while made as a parody, it proved to be a great horror flick.

I'm dragging this thread back to the surface because I just watched Pulse last night on DVD. ( Screw the theatre, I have one at home, and there is nothing I've watched in recent years I would have not regreted spending 8 bucks to see. )
I was told I probably wouldn't like it and it would be exactly what I expected.
The negatives first.
A little too dark in a couple of places, made it difficult to see things.
The characters lacked realism. Her boyfriend off'd himself and she isn't right over to see her friend when he is acting the same way?!?!?!
The relationship between the blonde and the guy who bought the computer...?

The pluses...
Framing, the lack of color, the effects, the lights in everyone's eyes. And the something I just cannot put into words.

As far as the whole remake thing....There are no new stories.
