Pulldown removal with a file captured in different software?

I have a program called Capture Magic SD (http://www.bigmugsoftware.com/capturesd/). I usually use this when I am doing multicam shoots. I recently got a dvx100b and tested it out with the program. It captured 24p and worked correctly but I can't figure out how to remove the advanced pulldown in final cut because it is not a file that was captured with final cut. Is there some other way to do this? I have final cut studio so if there is a way in cinema tools also then I could use this too.

Thanks.

24p doesn't use the advanced cadence.

"...because it was captured in Final Cut..." nope - wrong answer. As stated in the above post... I use CatDV's sister program LiveCapture and it works like a charm. Capture at 29.97 and use FC to remove the cadence.... but again, only if you've actually shot with the advanced cadence added.

What did you shoot?

What do you want?

Okay I didnt really explain myself properly. I shot in 24p advanced mode. I know that the camera actually writes to tape in 60i but then when capturing to fcp with a capture setting of 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown removal the interlaced frame are removed and you are left with 24fps progressive footage.

My problem is that I am not going to be capturing directly into fcp. I am using the program Capture Magic SD (http://www.bigmugsoftware.com/capturesd) to capture directly to the hard disk. This dv file is still 60i and includes the interlaced frame that I dont want. The problem with this is when I import the dv file into fcp, there is no way to remove the advanced pulldown and make the footage 24fps progressive.

I have considered using compressor to remove the pulldown but that involves recompressing the footage which obviously does not produce the highest quality image.

My solution seems to be with Cinema Tools. At http://www.adamwilt.com/24p/ it says "Indeed, Cinema Tools goes one step farther: it gives you the choice of either creating a new 24p file, or simply rewriting the Quicktime frame pointers in the original file to skip over the green frames! Rewriting the header is much faster (not that Cinema Tools is slow in writing a new file), but your "new" 24p file is about 25% larger than it needs to be, since it still contains the discarded frames, and you can no longer go back to that file and play it as a 60i file: Cinema Tools has no "undo" for rewriting the frame pointers." I have not figured out how to do this. Can anyone give me some direction with this?

No no...

Cinema Tools is for 3.2 cadence removal.

Tell us again why FCP won't remove the cadence? Can you select the clip in the browser and then TOOLS - Remove Advanced Pulldown Cadence?

Okay...CaptainMench "tools-remove advanced pulldown" in fcp for whatever reason this comes up with an error saying "unable to finds clips with advanced pulldown to process" And cinema tools does remove 2:3 and 2:3:3:2 pulldown. It says so in the manual.

Also, when I tried to open the file in cinema tools it wouldnt let me.

Okay I figured it out. I am now able to do a batch reverse telecine in cinema tools. My problem was stemming from the fact that there is an option in Capture Magic SD that you can choose between the captured file being either the raw .dv file or a .mov file. It was set on the raw .dv file and no program was being able to really work with it like it should. When I found this setting I switched it over to the .mov option (which is the same way that fcp captures, just check any of your captured stuff from fcp and you'll see that it captures to a .mov file that uses the dv/dvcpro codec at max quality). As soon as I did this cinema tools then recognized the file(s) and was able to do a batch revers telecine (remove the advanced pulldown).

Now captain mench, using cinema tools is the only way that I learned how to do a pulldown removal without doing it when you capture into fcp. I tried using the "tools-remove pulldown" in fcp and all it did is make the clip go offline and make it not even playable in quicktime anymore. I would like to know how this option in fcp works if you could explain it to me.

Glad you got it working.

Thanks for the CT reminder on advanced pulldown too.

As for the 'issue'... not sure. I only ever ran into that as a problem when I opened a new project and hadn't saved it yet.

Once saved, never an issue. (for me)

Oh well I hadnt saved the project because it was just a test so that may have been the problem. When it happened to you did it give you a message telling you that the lack of saving it was the problem or did you figure that out? FCP never told me that I needed to save it to perform the pulldown removal.

And could you please explain the "tools-remove pulldown" option in fcp? Does it rewrite the file or create a new one, should it give you some options, etc? Because as you can see in my last post, it didn't do anything good when I tried it. Then again it may have been because of not saving it.

No, never gave me the warning. Just figured it out.

What actually happens with the cadence is FCP finds the frames and ignores them. If you look at the time rate column you'll see 30 in it. That's because there are still 29 frames before you go back to 00. So, yes -- it leaves the clip (in the finder) alone and just flags it inside FCP (I think... actually as I write this I've never really dbl checked it.)
