public domain music?

Does anybody have any tips for me?

I'm producing a documentary on classic car show culture, and need some rock and roll music to use that I won't have to pay royalties on. I've heard that after 30 years, a song enters public domain, but I can't seem to find any sort of listing online of PD songs (that aren't choral or religious). Anyone know of one of these sites? Or where I could find some 50's or 60's free music?

You heard wrong. In the 70's music copyrights got extended Retroactively) to 70 years plus a 70 year extension. So basically you should assume that anything less than 150 years old is still in copyright - sort of hoses the R&R. You can however get royalty free music. You will usually have to pay for it but it's a one time fee. Google will get you a lot of hits. Digital juice has a set that would probably work for what you are looking for. Also there are some sites that are free for certain uses and you might qualify.
Sorry

when i'm on a budget and I need a backing track I either build it with acid pro, or buy some royalty free tunes from one of the myriad of websites out there. there are TONS of them, with tunes ranging from 5 dollars to 500 bucks. Sounddogs.com has a lot of pretty good cheap ones(around 20 dollars) , I'm not sure about rock, but it's probably there.

sounddogs.com is good but they dont really give away commercial rights for TV until further negotiation.

another site which gives you much wider rights (and it's cheap!) is productiontrax.com

that's the end user license for sound effects. but there's another and more complicated end user license for Production music, of which a part states..

-------------------------------------------
d. Use of the Music in theatrical motion pictures, television or cable movies, network television programs (specifically including, but not limited to, ABC, CBS, NBC, UPN, Fox, and the WB) or nationally television commercials shall require additional license fee(s) and permission from Sounddogs.com.

i tell you, twistedtracks.com doesn't have everything but what they do have is great quality and very affordable plus as they put it "once you've bought a license to a royalty-free track, it's yours to use as many times as you like, anywhere you'd like."

i mean you can buy one piece with a long version, 30 second version, 15 second version and loop 1 and loop 2 for $29 for the whole set.

and right now they are having a sale and they give you $50 just for registering (registraton is free) and then you can buy at least one full set right off the bat.

i have nothing to do with them other than being a repeat customer.

Baluardo,
hmm, they never sent me that license for the last piece of music I bought. luckily it was for a corporate, so it doesnt matter, but thanks for the heads up, no more sounddogs for me.
