Public Domain Classical Music Recordings - Musopen.org

Okay, this guy behind this obvisiously got $ 25k from pepsi and $ 70k from kickstarter for what seems a good idea:
http://www.refresheverything.com/musopen
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/Musopen/record-and-release-free-music-without-copyrights

But honestly, the recordings on his website are recordings, that where available before and it doesn't look very professional. And there are no recordings from a bigger Symphony Orchestras, like he is bragging on the pepsi-site. Did the guy behind this take the money and run away? Anyone knows?

Don't know the site, but while much classical music may well be in the public domain, RECORDINGS of music have their own independent copyright and almost no recordings are public domain.

The creator of the site plans to record pieces for public domain with a major symphony orchestra for everyone.

It's definitely a cool idea. It's basically a workaround the copyright laws as along as all parties involved agree to the terms.

I found this really cool website here:
http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/

There is a lot of stuff on there. The guy basically puts his stuff up there and you can pick what you want and use it for whatever you want. It's all free. Some of his samples are better than others, but for my needs, it's been good (I use it for our K-Tek videos that I've been making).

I know that Chad (the man with many talents) can do music and jingles as well, and based on what I've seen and heard of his stuff, it's really good. I think he would be a great go-to guy for specific things should you need it.

Pretty sure he's legit. I donated to the Kickstarter project. The guy answers his emails and is friendly, open to ideas - and nice.

Presumably he is now negotiating with various orchestras to get the best value for money for the $100,000 or whatever he's raised.

I think he wants to make it an annual project - but to do that first he needs to get some awesome stuff done with the money he's raised already.

If I were him, I'd want to spend a while making sure I got the best recording deal, also getting additional sponsors, etc.

Yes, I read a post of him on kickstarter now. There is nothing recorded yet. Hope he concentrates on few popular peaces and getting a really good orchestra.

They aren't going to be able to hire a big-name orchestra in the west (like the LSO) on those kinds of budgets. Certainly not unless they can get the orchestra, players and unions to buy into decimating or eliminating the royalty rights, etc.

OTOH, there are likely some very competent orchestras in eastern europe where they could actually pull this off.
