PS3 delayed eight months

Surprised nobody's brought this up yet. Sony was supposed to launch the PS3 this Spring, but they just announced that there are problems with the blu-ray drive and they won't be releasing it until November.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4807858.stm

Lots of people expected the PS3 to win the HD-DVD/blu-ray "war" for Sony, since the PS3 includes a blu-ray player with it. HD-DVD is due in stores in a couple of weeks, which means (if it arrives on time) it'll have eight months on the market before the PS3 arrives. And the delay on the PS3 is due to technical problems with the blu-ray portion of it...

... but is anybody really going to pay $500 for an HD-DVD player and $40 per HD-DVD movie? Even with the 8-month head start, will it matter?

Interesting, how this wacky world turns. I doubt we've heard the last of it!

Well, I for one appreciate all those people who's spend the extra cash on the pricey HD DVD's, and the HD DVD players, etc. The more people that do, then the sooner the prices will come down via competition, etc. so people like me will finally buy them when they're reasonably priced.

I'm not sure I count $500 for players and $40 for discs as too unreasonable. I mean, it's expensive, sure, but if you think about other technology launching recently it's not bad. It's cheaper than Laserdiscs were. :)

Eventually players will be $100 and discs will be $15 - $20, but for now, the prices are less than I thought they'd be.

My two cents.

Barry, yeah this is an interesting development I've been following it too but to be honest I am really sick of this format war. Apparently the people who hold the keys to the next format have essentially ignored what has happened with SACD and DVD-A. No unified format doesn't work. Duh.

Although the HD-DVD decks are coming out on time (end of month) first releases from studios have been pushed been at least a couple weeks. Toshiba has been doing roadshows of their decks, but they STILL have no actual software titles to demo on them. All they show is trailers, they don't even show menu screens. WB for example last I read said they were delaying their expected first titles but didn't give a new date.

Yeah the scoop is Blu-ray is the best, but if the PS3 is delayed at least the 8 mos they are reporting here, it could change everything. In my opinion with this new development and just overall confusion for the consumer this first generation of HD media (HD and BR) will just not be accepted by the mainstream. But I want to see them all fail (I really do) so that hopefully they'll get their heads out of their asses next time around.

Also I don't see the HD doftware selling at $40. Kinda like how all the DVDs now are listed at $25-40 each. They'll be maybe $10 higher though. But I'm not buying either way this time around.

Let's also keep in mind this is HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE for Microsoft.

microsoft wont be the reiging champ of the technology war for software. as soon as ps3 does come out microsoft will be upset they released a year to early. Playstation has always won the new console war and will continue. as for dvd i could care less but for gaming blu-ray is the better technology. developers enjoy it they say they hate they have to down grade to DVDHD.

Oh come on man! Do you work for Sony? Seriously though, no one's gonna argue with you that the tech behind the PS3 is going to be better than the 360. A year is a LOOOOONG time to 1-up technology.

But you have to be realistic and see the other side of that, 360 will have been in the market for 1 year. And when that killer PS3 does come out it's not going to be cheap. I've heard Spring 2007 looks more realistic and with a pricetag of $800! Xbox 360 will obviously drop it's prices right before or on the same date that PS3 launches. It's the Sony PS2 sales model applied back onto Sony now.

they said realistically that they will probably be around 500 to make a real profit. and profit matters so they will be around what the xbox 360 is or so.

You guys, the PS3 and MAC are the two biggest generators of rumors.

Why do you think Sony waits so long to release new technology?
Measure twice, cut once. I've been dealing with Sony product (home and car) for ten years and they have never been the first at any thing. Seems strange that a company like Sony would want to wait, but I'll give an example.

If you will remember when mobile video was the new thing to put in your car, Sony said no, why you ask. Well most (if not all by now) have a law that prohibits the viewing of motion video by the driver (which brings up these new cell phones) While I know of only one case where some one was charged, Sony did not want to be sued over a bad driver watching a movie and kill a bus load of kids. Sony waited, relased video product after three years and gave us a very good product.
So if you look at the HD DVD and BLU RAY formats and compatibilities of hardware, maybe Sony is just holding off to make the PS3 both HD and BLU RAY. You just don't know till you see it.

Mac is the same way...MP3 players were out for at least a couple years before Apple put out the iPod...they waited, looked at how everyone else did theirs and finally came out with the best product around...

Apple rocks...

(this coming from someone who has never used a PC...nope, not once...)

spidey, actually they don't make any $ on the consoles themselves. They make it on the software. They eat quite a bit on each console they sell (both MS and Sony)

They might "eat quite a bit" during initial sales, but by the time the thing has been on the market for six months you can bet they're making $$ on all aspects and components of the system.

from cnet:

"The estimated total bill of materials for Sony's next-generation game console will be between $725 and $905, according to various estimates. In comparison, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft comes with a component bill between $501 and $525...

consoles_chart_232x215.gif

...Merrill Lynch wrote in a widely publicized research note that the component bill would total $900, not including a detachable drive, but Merrill later told CNET News.com that it meant to say $800....Merrill Lynch, in fact, estimates that the component bill will drop to $320 in three years, not including the detachable drive."

So in 3 years, it's still costing them $300+ per console.

Interesting stats.

As you pointed out, the manufacturing costs at the beginning will not remain constant over the entire production run of the PS3.

My only point is: Sony will make money from the hardware when it's all said and done.

right on, but you can see these things cost them a TON! they really do lose a lot on each console sale. The games is where it's at for them.

I guess I'm the only Nintendo fanboy holding out for Revolution?
