PS Overlay in fcp: strage results...

So I followed Capt. M's tutorial for having multi-screen windows going in fcp ( http://www.proapptips.com/proapptip...11A/CD2733FE-EAAB-484D-B6C5-E2196B8026C9.html ) *These are really great tutorials, if you haven't seen them, check them out!

A few undesirable results:

-The 3 clips I have running under the matte show through the black a bit, I can see, although severely darkened, the cropped parts of each clip around the border of the matte window...

-I reduced the clips to 40% to fit them in the windows and the colors and pixelation went to crap. They look awful. I would expect this from up-rezzing, but is there something that needs to be done to preserve the quality if you're shrinking clips via "percentage" in the motion tab?

-And for the advanced enthusiasts: Is there a way to put a white border around each of the individual windows?

Any experienced advice appreciated...

As for your second concern, did you blow the window up to 100% to check it, or are you looking at it in "fit to window" mode? I bet it all looks good if you blow that window up to 100% and resize it to see the whole thing. Also, are you judging by your computer screen (it will lie to you), or an external reference monitor?

A white border around each, that's easy. You go to the Effect tab, the Filters folder, the Border folder, the Basic Border filter. Then just set the color and thickness, poof, done. Once you have one of those clips done, just copy and paste that border filter from the first one you did to the others.

That is a really great tutorial by Capt. M. You can also do all that inside FCP without using PS at all. Either way, same results. And using FCP's mattes, you can adjust feathering on the edges. A very tiny hint of feathering really makes the mattes pop!

Hmm, yes it's at 100% on a 19" reference monitor, which I always use and the 40% windows are def super-pixellated, looks like "Pitfall" on the atari 2600. Is there a better way to shrink a window aside from in the motion tab? Should I be having super-pixellated video at 40%?

Ah, I found the problem: I have the 3 seperate clips running in one canvas, each is about 40% and they look fine... until I introduce a title that fades in and out. The title is not over any of the 3 clips, it is on black space in the corner, but when it's rendered out even, it makes the 3 clips crazy pixellated and pong-like. Any thoughts why this would happen? The title was made in Boris and doesn't overlap the clips at all, can't understand why it would be effecting them...? Trying to finish this trailer for Austin Film Fest this weekend...

Strange, I've done this and only seen that problem on the computer monitor. External monitor always looked good, and when I render it out and go to DVD it's fine.

Try this test, after you render it all out, export a self-contained QT file. Open it in QT Player and see what it looks like.

What version of FCP are you on, what Mac model, how much RAM?

I'm on FCP studio, on the last 2.3 dual core power mac with 2.5 gigs of ram... i will burn a dvd and pop it in the tv, thanks!
