Proxy Edit. OMF? AAF? XML EDL?

I am wondering if it's possible to do this in FCP.

I've got footage that I've downloaded from a friends ftp. The footage has been exported out at a much lower resolution to facilitate a quick download.

I want to edit the lower rez footage that I have now (like a proxy edit.) And once I get the original, higher rez footage, be able to swap it for the lower rez stuff. All whilst keeping the edits that I've made in place.

Is this possible, and if so what is the work flow that I would need to follow?

The only way it would work is if you have access to the original files as they were captured by the friend- hopefully on FCP. Then you could match your edit to the original media using Batch Capture. But if you don't have that access- then you'd wind up doing it manually piece by piece- big PITA.

I'd suggest making all efforts to get access to the original media, a FedEx of hard drive or tapes or whatever the original is will be a lot cheaper and less hassle in the long run.

I will have access to the originals, just not for a few days but I wanted to get a head start on the editing.

So you're saying he should import the files in FCP. Render out a lower rez version of the entire footage. Then I should edit that footage and do a batch capture once I get the original footage?

THis will only work if the low res footage has matching timecode to the original. It must match exactly, or this won't work at all. If you do have matching code, and the clips have exactly the same name and TC and duration of the masters, then you can edit in a low res timeine, then reconnect to the master footage later. You will have to adjust the sequence settings to match the master footage once you relink.
