Proud new owner of used equipment; and a question

After a lot of back and forth on my part and some varying advice from this forum, I plunked down some hard earned cash and purchased a used but very clean 744t. Combined with my 302, I have four channels of very clean sound, wohoo!. And as with any SD gear, my immediate reaction was to the great build quality which is one of the things I wanted to improve over my 680. When testing, one of the first things I noticed is how clean the headphone monitoring circuit is compared to anything else I use. The first couple of clips recorded on a bench test were excellent, simply in a different league than my previous setups. I wish I had done this upgrade sooner. This is a pretty big deal for me; excellent sounding dual system.

I realize there were good reasons to go a different direction with this, the 302 + 744 isn't the most modern solution and long term, there might be more depreciation than going with a 633 or something of newer design. But I really imagine keeping this setup for the long term and if nothing else, the audio quality is still excellent. What is out there that sounds better than a 7 series for field audio?

Now a question: do any of you with a 744 or other 7 series use the keyboard interface and keyboard for entering metadata? Seems a little clunky for field production, but my metadata has always been nonexistent and now have this opportunity.

Thanks to those who gave me advice, even if you didn't tell me what I wanted to hear here.

I always used a keyboard when on a cart based system.. changing roll/scene/take files names much easier. I then generate the reports in Wave Agent after adding pertinent comments from a written log.

Congrats on the purchase! Even though it might not be the latest piece of gear out there your setup will definitely work for a long long time. I'm still using my 744t, and quite happily.

To answer your question, I've seen people use small keyboards with the 744t, but I couldn't tell you which keyboard as I've never actually done it myself.

The whole MetaData issue has bit me in the backside a couple of times, not with audio but video. As my archives slowly increase, and now adding audio files, is going to require some better organization and a dedicated archive raid.

SD places a pretty serious value on that little keyboard interface unit.

I suppose I knew this was coming, but I am now chucking in for a bunch of new connector and power cables, each one special (read expensive). I'm sure you dedicated pro audio guys are snickering at my pain. In a former life, I owned a mechanical-machine shop and this is nothing like that for expenses, but the revenue stream isn't nearly the same either!
