At long last our Proteus rails system is officially patent "pending" ... and the final piece of the puzzle is in hand. The grip handles and pad are all you need to convert any of our Proteus rails systems for shoulder mount use. They are made 100% from aluminum billet stock, computer machined and then powder coated for a very durable finish to match the Proteus rails system. The components can be independently mounted at just about any angle and rails position imaginable. You'll find our logo machined right in to the grips so they'll stay pretty for a lifetime. Even in "shoulder mount mode" the Proteus system retains its ability to remain tripod mounted and balanced for maximum shooting efficiency. The shoulder pad is crafted here in Canada (like pretty much everything we sell) by a specialist in military pack gear. In other words, we spent the time making sure it will survive many years of abuse. The pad comes with velcro attachment materials to affix and remove it from the Proteus base plate system. Here's a few pics:

Heya Dennis!

Thanks for posting this. I was actually at the Cinevate site the other day and wondering where the handles and pad were. One question -- can the handles and pad work with ANY rails set up? I already have a Redrock rails system going on, but don't want to purchase the shouldermount because of all the reported slippage problems.

Heya Dennis!

It doesnt look like you could use the pad with any other rails system because it appears that the pad mounts to the bottom of the riser. Maybe Dennis Can confirm.

Slippage should not be an issue for anyone. In the shoulder mount mode, you'll definitely want to take advantage of the tool-less fastener's ability to be further tightened with the key provided. Once properly snugged up, the system is solid and certainly well tested in the field.

Technically the grips and pad can be used with any 15mm rails system out there, but you'd want to add the Proteus base from the upgrades section of the site. This adds a fair bit of expense to a third-party system, however you would end up with an incredibly versatile rig. It would also add the ability to add rearward or downward projecting at your back.

I haven't mentioned our "shorty" rails option in this post, however the Proteus rails system can be purchased with the short links which work exactly the same as the longer versions, but allow ENG camera mounting, can be used with "bare" video cameras, and also used with non-flip adapter rigs. The system is designed to provide options for use with every conceivable rig out there. We have yet another sweet option coming that will have even RED camera users taking a long hard look at the system. At approximately half the weight of stainless systems, and still 75% stiffer, they're designed to be the last rails system you'll ever purchase.

Thanks again Dennis. And just to clarify, I meant that I didn't want to purchase the RR shouldermount despite having RR rails because of its slippage issues. I really do want to purchase the Proteus shouldermount as it seems more secure and worth the money.

Woohooo! Mike and I were doing some time lapse stuff today and were talking about the RED rails and how heavy they are and wished the rails we have fit because they are much lighter but still strong enough. Thats great you are moving to making RED accessories in your line up. You might need to make a bigger bowl for the Ballare to accommodate bigger heads if heavier cameras are to be used on it.

Pops, sorry about that. I didn't realize there was a slippage issue with that product. In that case, our Proteus base plate and the shoulder rig kit would be all that was required and yes, you could use their 15mm stainless rails. You end up gaining a ton of rails length in the shoulder mount mode so even 30cm rails would be sufficient.

I've only seen rails tolerance issues with a few other "low cost" manufacturers (who I won't mention) but RRM is not one of them.

Damn Dennis, your ears mustve been ringing when we were talking about you and making some 19mm solid CF rails.

Friggin' telepathic. :)

Leo, the sticks on the HV20 rig (503 head) are the Manfrotto 351MVCF carbon. We don't use them a ton simply because they have a 75mm bowl and all of our working heads use 100mm, but so far no complaints. The legs can be adjusted nearly to the ground which makes them handy for low angle shots.

Mike, the rails are only part of the picture on the rails...check your email. Big congrats to you and Aram on the Urbanmouse!

We've had quite a few requests for the grips (less the pad) from folks using third party rails...we'll have them up in the catalog "alone" again today :-)

That's our 12Volt rails mounted power supply (due about a year ago from us) and a set of our carbon 45cm rails, shortened to 30cm. The power supply has been a victim of a few other higher priority projects...however this one is slated for release with two projects from the "skunkworks" that we've been slaving over for about 18 months. More to come on these soon:-) The power supply itself is a 10Ah unit that will keep a monitor like the Marshall going for 9 hours, and then "smart" charge itself back up in about 4 hours.

Cheers,
Dennis.
