Hey everyone. I'm looking at getting a good "prosumer" camera, and I have been having some problems deciding on which one to get. I thought I would turn to these forums since I'm sure you all know more than I do.
I've been researching cameras for awhile, and I have read that there are several problems with the HDV format (used by Canon and Sony), especially when editing in Final Cut (Express and Pro, I currently use Express, but could probably spring for the Studio).
The cameras I'm looking at in this genre are the Canon XH-A1 and the Sony HVR-V1U. The Canon seemed like a great deal until I read somewhere that neither version of FC support Canon's 24f frame rate.
Could someone help me figure out what the major problems with the HDV format are?
There is also the format used by the Panasonic HVX200 (I forget the name). Unfortunately, to get a decent HVX200 set up costs a great deal due to the cost of P2 cards. So this seems to be out the window.
Then there is the non-high definition options. The two that seem to come up all the time are the DVX100 and the Canon XL2. I know there is a great deal of supporters for one camera or the other. The DVX100 has true 24p, but I keep hearing the Canon produces better quality images. Both seem to be good options and I haven't heard of any issues about editing their footage in either FCP or FCE.
I currently shoot a documentary style comedy (mockumentary - think The Office). I'm pretty certain that 24fps isn't needed for this style, but I am also planning to shoot a short movie, which I'd really like to have 24p/f, for the "film" look.
So there is my issue. It seems I can go with one of the HDV choices or a non-high definition camera. Anyone have any advice or helpful thoughts on the matter?
