ProRes to h264 and back

I've got some RED footage which has been outputted as 1080p ProRes 4:2:2 HQ through RedCine-X, and I'm cutting it together with some dSLR footage which is natively .h264.

If I use a sequence set to the .h264 as the bulk of my footage is dSLR, and then bring the ProRes into it, rendering as I do - edit that way and then change the sequence settings to ProRes 4:2:2 HQ before exporting the final video (selecting re-render all frames), will the ProRes'd RED footage suffer? Or because the clips are ProRes, will it simply look back to those on the export and re-render, and quality will be preserved?

I would find this system easier than doing an offline and an online myself...though I know most will question why I don't just do it that way.

As far as I know, NLE always recompresses. The only difference being that some codecs can recompress multiple times before any serious degradation occurs. The exception of cousre is RAW footage itself with no compression.

If you change the final export back to ProRes- the RED footage will be fine. Anytime you do an export to a specific setting the app automatically goes back to the original media files for the final export. That said- I'd recommend converting the H.264 to ProRes and cutting on a ProRes timeline- much better optimized for transitions/effects.
