Prores Confusion!

Hello

I've looked in forums and all around the internet but I can't seem to find the exact answer to what I am looking for. Nevertheless, it is a newbie question.

I'm currently trying to put a feature length film together for SD DVD. I filmed in HDV 24P and then captured as HDV to 29.98 fps and then used the apple recommended settings in compressor to remove pulldown- I am therefore now with ProRes 422.

I edited these in the FCP timeline and now I want to export individual sequences before I put them together in my final "feature-length" timeline and add in any transitional music tracks to bring the film together. I will then use compressor's DVD settings to create that file which I throw into DVD SP to get my final DVD.

So, to get my individual sequences, what settings should I use to get .mov files from my ProRes timelines which I can then add to a new final cut sequence? I have tried exporting using the ProRes (HQ) setting but that doesn't seem to work. The footage is in the wrong aspect ratio and the quality is just gone. It is terrible.

Generally, is my workflow okay is there another way to get better quality/efficiency?

Thanks in advance:)

Yeah this guide has been floating around the net- but if you look around further, they say this is a wasteful way of doing it, and that quality suffers. I did look at the final result through compressor- the footage is in the right aspect ratio but the quality is heavily deteriorated- not just lower sd resolution.

Anyone else with any ideas?

Try just creating QuickTime Reference movie. Select the timeline, File->Export->QT Movie, leave all settings at default and UNcheck "make movie self contained".

Thanks for your help.

This looks like it is working. I made a .m2v file from the .mov file and have got good quality. Do you suggest I now burn to dvd to check the 'final' quality of one scene or is the m2v file representative of the final dvd result? Also, I was wondering, what exactly does 'not making movie self-contained' do? Does it mean that I can't delete the original footage I edited this sequence from?

Thanks once again.
