how do i create a propper composition for footage shot on the dvx in 24PA mode? This has been picking my brain for quite some time. When i import the raw avi, AE see's it as 29.97i but it obviously needs to see it in 23.976P.

Any takers?

Well, how did you get the footage into your computer and what settings did you use then...if you removed the pulldown properly then you will be working with 23.976/23.98 footage with a .9 pixel aspect ratio if it's NON-widescreen and 1.2 if it is widescreen. Best way to do things is to drag the footage to the new comp button at the bottom of the project window and it'll make a comp with all the right settings, according to your footage.

i captured it in adobe premier 2.0 and put it on a 24P timeline (it see's that it is 23.976 but AE doesnt)

- Select the footage in the project window
- Left-click and choose: Interpretere Footage | Main... ( or simply hit Ctrl+F )
- Find the button that says guess Advance 24P
- this will make the footage play at 24 fps.

thanks, thats exactly what i needed to know, now, what format should i export it in so i can re-import the avi back into premier to edit? DVCPRO at 29.97? (because then premier will re-remove the pull down?) or should i do it as a raw avi at 23.976p?

If Premiere's project settings are 24p export the footage as is (make sure also comp settings are 23,97 fps).

If Premiere's project settings are 29,97 then you don't have to do the pulldown in AE.

But I'm not really sure about my answer. You will need to experiment and see if the fx shot matches in fps and motion with the non vfx shots in Premiere's timeline when playing.

Ive never been comforatble with AE's bizarre pulldown selections. we are all familiar with 2-3 and 2-3-3-2, but with AE it's the damned WS scheme. Multiple combinations for both 24p and 24pa. Never been really sure which is which and why.
