Proper sub-titles?

Maybe I'm getting sub-titles and closed captioning confused ...

I'm adding sub-titles to one of our BTS videos for SPARROW (hoping & praying I can finally get this all wrapped up this week & available on DVD next week!), and can't figure out if I should be using punctuation or not.

Thoughts? Does the punctuation just get in the way because it's something else for the brain to process while watching/listening to the video?

NOT having proper punctuation annoys me more... it seems to stand out. Of course, it's also annoying when you see things like an exclamation mark added to a sentence that was delivered by the actor in anything BUT an excited manner.

Closed captioning is often done live or very quickly. I tend to notice a lack of punctuation on live broadcasts like the news. I chalk that up to speed being more important than proper punctuation.

Oh good, well you'll like this then Owen, because I've punctuated the snot out of it ... I was afraid I was being to careful with the commas, etc.

Woo hoo!

I did a bit of subtitling myself yesterday, though I'm sure I screwed up my comma placement. I do have periods at the ends of all sentences though!

Mine are burned into the screen as titles in Avid since Encore crashes and corrupts my project whenever I do subtitles. What are you using?

Vegas. I can add sub-titles in DVD Architect 3, but since this is just a special feature & it's a dialect issue vs. language issue, I'm just putting them straight onto the video through Vegas.
