PROPER EDITING SYSTEM. what do I need?

hi I would like to build an editing system where i can edit high quality 24p video.

I have a P4 3.00GHZ computer with 512mb of ram in it. I also have premiere 6.5 but i guess that isn't any good because it doesnt support 24p. Now i know that the computer comes with an IEEE but it came with the computer.

What else do I need?

Do i need a program like vegas, 512mb extra ram, 400GB HD, and some type of new great capture card to edit a full feature in uncompressed mode?
I want the quality to be as high as it can. Is the computer going to perform right if so much data is being moved around?

Please let me know in detail how to go about with this. I only edited video in the 2.5 mb/second mode on premiere 6.5.

I'm thinking about hiring an editor but why do that if it will probably cost more than just doing it yourself.

also what is the best software to go with? premiere or vegas etc.?

Well, If your copy of Premiere is a legal copy, upgrading to PPro 1.5 is cheaper than a full version of Vegas, and you'll sort of be up to speed if you already know 6.5.
I would highly recommend upgrading your ram to at minimum 1 gig - more if you can afford it.
A second hard drive for clip/project storage. You want to run your OS on a different drive than your storage drive.

What do you mean by "high quality"?

You don't "NeeD" a capture card like the Matrox or Canopus, but they do have some added features. Unfortunately the Matrox card doesn't support 24p at the moment.

does my IEEE capture card that came with my computer support 24p? I really want the 24P feature to stay.

So you can actually have a pro NLE for $1,500?

thanks guys. What is the best software to get which i can learn quickly and which is very good overall? how much does each cost?

my premiere 6.5 is a borrowed copy so i cant upgrade.

My choice - Premiere Pro 1.5.1 -
I'm sure others will chime in with Vegas, FCP, AVID, etc.... It's really a personal choice.
None of the above mentioned programs are cheap so I'd recommend going to their sites and downloading the trial versions if they have them and see which one suits you best.

wells... I thought you were a Mac guy? Not to start another one of those threads....

your link above goes nowhere....

I've used both. The Premeire system is wayy faster for .m2v encoding than my wimpy Powerbook.

I'm leaning Mac at the moment because it's the only system ready to edit HVX200 footage.
Which, of course, that ought to change in six months we should hope. . .

Yeh cool. I have the Matrox card too. I had a project this past summer that was boring as hell but paid for most of my gear. A client had a VHS library of 500 tapes, 30min-90min ea., that they wanted transfered to DVD. No editing, just straight to DVD. I was able to capture through the Matrox card as .m2v files and go back out straight to DVD with no encoding. It was a huge time-saver!

Same here. 70 MiniDV tapes with conference/lecture crap they wanted on DVD's.
Added bumpers to the front and end and set chapter marks in DVDit! then BAM!
That was the easiest way to make a quick buck back in the time.

hey guys there is an auction on ebay where this guy is selling premiere pro info for $1. the info tells you how to hetppro for $25. I just paid him but i guess i have to wait for an e-mail or something.

Look at it this way - at least you only got ripped off for a buck. Some poor ebayers have lost much more.....

Hey, I've got a grilled cheese sandwich with the face of Mount Rushmore on it that I'll sell you for $20Bucks......

Well I've tried Avid, Premiere, and Vegas and I chose Vegas as my editor. For me it pertty much beats the others hands down. This was back in a time where I think Vegas was the only plug and play sort of editor. It accepted any media files, played them back realtime etc all without a single hitch. And you get good audio tools built into it. But as suggested earlier, download the trials. You'll find Vegas hard to work with at first if you are a Premiere guy.

I think MichaelP at Avid might disagree with you on that -- Express HD is ready now.

Ahhh, yes. I'm really excited to hear about ExpressHD.. But, not yet ready for Macs... PC Only.
And, from everything I've read, still no DVCPRO-HD over Firewire for export to tape on PC's.

If they get that resolved, then yup Avid is a serious contender for my bucks.
Big reason? I can't get the Tektronix plug-in for anything but Avid.
