Projecting a life sized timelapse

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is the right section for this, but i have been asked to shoot a timelapse of some guys painting/spraying a wall and they wanted to project this TL at their exhibition...
We came up with the idea of projecting it from quite a big distance so that they appeared life sized on the wall that it was being projected on... (As if they were there doing it for real...)

So far in planning this, we have decided that the wall that they are painting on with need to be the same size at it is being projected onto and that the camera will have to be the same distance from the wall at the projector will be....( we would like to have it floor to ceiling and wall to wall ideally)

I am basically wondering if anybody can share any wisdom on shooting something like this...?
We will hopefully be shooting it on a 5D mk2 and using stills to capture the TL...

At the moment i haven't had a chance to see the location that they will be painting or where it will be projected, obviously this is important in determining the distance between the projector and wall etc.

Any advice will be much appreciated!

thanks

Tom

I'm not sure you're thinking about this right with the distance thing. What you need to do is frame your shot so that the timelapse fills it as best you can, and measure the height of the wall. If that's the height you want, you calculate the distance the projector has to be to achieve that size. You can find a good calculator here:

Notice that different projectors throw differently.

I would think your lens choice is very important here too. Mainly, I'd be concerned with vertical height of the scene you're shooting matching the wall you'll be projecting on. Then, as long as you make sure the projector is throw the entire height of the wall the image will be to scale.

Thanks for both of your responses!
yeah, i probably am getting a little confused with the projector distance etc... I think i have been thinking about it so much that its just a blur! ha.

I think the lenses available will be a 24-105mm and a 35mm maybe.

I need to find out what projector we will be using, and also take a visit to the location and get some measurements of the walls and the amount of space we have to position the projector.

Thanks

Tom
