Project Settings in Final Cut

Can someone please fill me in on how to set my project and capture settings accordingly in FCP? I usually shoot 24p, but other times I shoot 30p or 60i.

In Adobe Premiere Pro, when you start a project, it asks you specifically what settings you want (frame rate, aspect ratio, etc), but in Final Cut, it seems vague, and every time I open a new sequence I have to go through and adjust my settings until the footage looks right.

The default aspect ratio is NTSC DV 3:2. What is 3:2? I shoot 4:3, but somehow 3:2 looks right and 4:3 looks a little bit squeezed...please help!
Thanks,
Andrew

If you have the latest version of Final Cut, the second you drop a clip on a new timeline, it asks you if you want to conform the timeline to the clip.

Hmm - I have Final Cut 5.1.4 I think. I guess i need Studio 2.

Any idea about aspect ratio? What is NTSC DV 3:2 compared to 4:3?

FCP has a plethora of Easy Setups to chose from to setup your project. Just pick the Easy Setup that matches what you shot. NTSC DV 4:3 sets the timeline for 640x480 and NTSC DV 3:2 sets the timeline for 720x480. There are rare exceptions but rolling your own sequence settings is pretty much a sure fire way to make FCP *not* perform as it should. Easy Setups are your friends.

So if I'm shooting 4:3, 24p with the DVX, which do I want?
23.98? 24? 29.97?
3:2? 4:3?
Thanks,
Andrew

Did you shoot 24p or 24pA? If you shot regular 24p just use the DV-NTSC Easy Setup. If you shot 24pA there is a sticky at the top of this forum w/directions for properly handling 24pA footage.
